Effective marketing is not about persuading random people to be interested in your service. It is sifting through the masses to find those people who already need your service, and are motivated to take action.

It's remarkable that the leaders in advertising have remained the same two names over the last ten years: Google and Facebook. Sometimes my clients develop a bias for one platform or the other but I almost always try to push them towards using both. I believe they work together symbiotically. You're unlikely to maximize your lead generation and revenue when utilizing only one or the other.

Most construction and home services companies chase more leads before they fix what's happening to the ones they already get. Before you spend another dollar on ads, ask yourself: How fast are we responding to the leads we have?

Is someone picking up the phone within five minutes?

Do we have a follow-up process, or do inquiries just sit in an inbox?

Speed and consistency are just as important as lead volume.

Nail your follow-up first — then scale.

Wouldn't it be nice if you knew the perfect photo to use in your Facebook ad along with the perfect messaging in order to get Facebook users to turn into leads? Here at Story Pro I have a testing protocol that allows me to hone in on high-performing photos and wording to help convert casual Facebook browsers into actual leads. It doesn't cost a lot of money to run the test and really helps me get a new campaign off on the right foot.

Right now I'm seeing a really wide disparity in terms of how easy it is to generate leads online depending on the type of construction business that you're in. Lead costs can legitimately vary between $20 and $500 per lead depending on your niche.

Do you need more leads or do you need better quality leads? Here are a few tips to improve your lead quality or quantity:

If you need more leads:
- Experiment with fresh ad media.
- Try sending traffic to a different page on your website or a fresh landing page concept.
- Make it easier for prospects to become a lead (reduce the number of fields in your form).

If you need higher quality leads:
- Make your site visitors scroll through more information before they can take an action.
- Create additional steps or pre-qualification items before a lead can successfully submit a form.
- Send visitors an intermediate item like a brochure or a catalog and require them to contact you after they have received it.
- For Google Ads, narrow the list of keywords and make them exact match only.

When it comes to restaurants, people aren't looking for quality per se; they're actually looking for consistency. That explains why McDonald's can still do a brisk business even though the quality may be such that the CEO only wants to take a nibble.

When you make a promise to your customer, are you able to deliver consistent results? Not every contractor has to be a premium provider, but in order for great reviews and referrals to stack up, you need to consistently deliver on your promises.

Your marketing guy sends you a report and one term keeps coming up: conversions.
What's a conversion? Let's put it in plain English.

A conversion is actually a pretty broad term. Basically, it's any action your customer takes that you're measuring.
In most cases, a conversion refers to a customer becoming a lead — submitting a form or making a phone call. But sometimes it's further up the funnel. Maybe the marketing agency is tracking:

Views of a specific page
Clicks on a specific button
Whether visitors take a survey or browse a particular gallery

Any of those could be conversions, so it's important to know what your marketing agency actually means when they use the term. Are they talking about leads, or some other action?

Key takeaway: Not all conversions are equally important. Make sure you know what your agency means by conversions, and you'll be better prepared to make smart business decisions.

What if you could double or triple the average value of your leads? I believe you can. The short version is this: Serve every customer so well that on average you get one or two referrals from every customer. It's not easy, but it is attainable. This list will get you started:
- Train your techs to master the first impression.
- Set clear pricing expectations and avoid surprise charges.
- Always look for a little something extra that you can do for the client, free of charge.
- Implement a simple but effective system for keeping the client in the loop from start to finish.
- Have a systematic way to ask for referrals.

"Trust me, I do great work." — Every contractor ever.

Unfortunately, homeowners don't believe you nearly as much as they believe your last ten customers.

If you’re relying on "remembering" to ask for a review, you’re missing out on the most powerful lead-gen tool in your arsenal. A systematic approach to reviews means:

Speed: Asking while the "new kitchen" high is still fresh.

Consistency: Your 5-star count grows every single week, not just once in a while.

Visibility: Google loves active businesses. Every new review is a signal that you’re the pro to pick.

Don't just do the work—make the work work for you.

I recently came across this stat: Average response time for roofing companies is around 48 hours after the lead comes in. If it's true, that's pretty appalling. The reason it's appalling is that according to studies, leads that are contacted within 5 minutes are 21x more likely to convert than those contacted after 30 minutes.

When you're busy this spring, don't forget to respond to leads! Or better yet, delegate the job to a person or machine who is always on the alert.

Marketing Trap for Contractors: Thinking that your leads should cost the same as other contractor's leads.
A lot of factors affect your cost per lead:
- Where you're advertising
- How well your business is known in that area
- How much your competitors are spending on ads
- Your positioning (premium or budget service, general or niche, etc)

Approach your marketing with the "How can we get better every month?" mentality. It avoids both the trap of unmet expectations and the trap of complacency.
