People don't look at more than 3 businesses before making a decision about who they want to buy from.

It's as bad as being hungry in a place that smells like cookies and having three of your faaaaaavorite deserts grabbing you by your nose hairs.

Let's go through it quickly.

Okay, look:

- Business Reviews aren't ENOUGH.
- H1 Heading tags aren't enough (however useful)
- NAP is great, but not enough.

So if you've done those already...

Great news,

1. The three things listed above ARE necessary, if you have those AWESOME you're off to a good start.

2. Googles a machine, it's a robot and works on citations, you need to have the relevant ones for your area {service} {near me} {description / offer} in order for you to even appear.

Someone could be 500 feet away from your business...

if you don't specifically tell google

"find people who are LESS THAN OR UP TO 500 feet away, AND they have searched for something similar to my service AAAAAND have purchased a similar service."

then it won't even show them you exist.. completely blind, this thing.

Sounds simple - but, It's reallllly IMPORTANT to communicate to it the way IT understands, as opposed to how we think as humans..

3. Stay LLM and GPT Search enabled 24/7.

This is when your website speaks to things like SIRI, and the rest of the AI 'helpers'.

Quick way to get higher in Google -(Well worth your time to read)

Hi,

Got a super easy way to rank higher in Google for you. And it's easy to implement as well. Zero technical knowledge needed.

If you run a business you get reviews. Hopefully they're good. Hopefully you get them somewhat regularly.

If you don't - you should fix that. It helps in ranking to get a regular stream of them. We'll talk about that in the future.

Anyway, most businesses get reviews and they do one of two things:

1) They are happy with the review but they don't respond to it

2) They are happy with the review and they respond to it with a polite response like:

"Thank you so much for your kind review, we really appreciate it!"

Number 2 is better than number 1. You should respond to reviews, it's a great idea.

But.

Google is a big robot. It is just crawling your profile all the time to figure out what you do and where you do it.

Everything you can do to help Google make sense of WHAT you do and WHERE you do it? That's a good thing.

So instead of just politely responding, make sure your response has keywords in it that you're trying to rank for.

If you're a tree surgeon in Texas and you want to get more jobs in West Texas and you get a review from someone near there, you'd instead reply by saying:

Thank you so much for the kind review. It was our pleasure to remove your trees in West Texas. We're doing more and more jobs in West Texas, not just in Houston but also Fort Worth and Dallas.

Would love to help you out in the future with any of your forrestry needs, be it tree removal, crown removal, tree trimming and tree prunning and anything else!

That gives the Google bot a full five course meal instead of throwing it some scraps.

The Hungry Google Caterpillar Problem

It's Us

I check the Google presence of over 100 businesses every month. And a ton of them make the same mistake.

You remember this children's book? (photo below)

if not - we understand. some of the team have multiple kids, so we know alllll about children's books.

It's about a very hungry caterpillar. I won't spoil the ending, but I can tell you it's a happy ending.

Unfortunately, in Google land the caterpillar doesn't end up happy.

So Google allows you to put in a 'service area'. Basically telling them where you work. And tons of business owners decide to make that just as big as possible. I usually see service areas of 60, 100, even 170 square miles.

I've seen service areas that included multiple countries. A carpenter shop that had a service area of half the Earth.

Problem is that the greater your designated work area... the harder it is to rank.

Because you're less relevant to basically any searcher.

So your impact is diluted by the amount of terrain you're trying to cover.

One of the easiest ways to fix and increase rankings is just to start with a small area. You will find it much easier to rank there. And then, if you do the right things over time, you'll rise in rankings in the areas close to you.

So, in short, don't be like the caterpillar.
