Gram! 🖤 Lifting / A Love Letter
Here are the scans of my two gram pieces, finished a couple of months ago. These celebrate my tenacious grandma, Donna French, and her origins as a children’s librarian. In the 1960s, she started the Aurora, OH elementary school libraries (who at the time had none) out of her VW van - “the bus”. Initially, she would borrow from other libraries to source her books. Eventually, she was given a hallway to set up in as seen in pics - before getting a room and paid staff position at the schools. She made reading fun, inclusive and expansive for countless children while also creating safe, funky, and welcoming spaces for all. 🖤 Thank you, gram.
These measure 24’’x24’’ and 26’’x26’’ and are screen prints on old familial fabrics (the floral was a fabric she used as a giant tablecloth during family gatherings; also included are pieces of her skirt scraps), hand-dyed fabrics - collaged, decoupaged, and stretched over wooden frames. Also re-sharing the first two pieces in this collection, me and my ma.
