Cannabis could soon be rescheduled from a Class I substance to a Class III.
As reported by NBC, Forbes, and other news organizations, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is expected to approve an opinion submitted by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
"Attorney General Merrick Garland will submit the rescheduling proposal to the White House Office of Management and Budget as early as Tuesday afternoon, a source familiar with the timeline told NBC News," NBC News said.
While some consider this a step forward, there are some who are wary of cannabis being on the Controlled Substances list at all.
"In short, Armentano recommended that 'the cannabis plant should be removed from the Controlled Substances Act altogether, thereby providing state governments — rather than the federal government — the ability to regulate ma*****na in the manner they see fit without violating federal law, and allowing the federal government to provide standards and guidelines for regulated cannabis markets,'" Forbes said.
