I've been working on a OneNote sync issue for a few weeks, so when "Microsoft Support" called I answered. I was a bit surprised that it was for a billing issue. I knew our CC had expired in the last few months, so I assumed it was related to that. I logged in and checked our account and it was already updated. Then he mentioned something about our subscription (singular) and that sounded fishy because as a longtime partner we have several.

I dug a bit more about next steps and he offered to send me an email so that I could update my CC with him. Bad sign. It came through on caller ID as "MICROSOFT" but I searched the 425-635-2970 and...

TLDR - It's a scam. It's a pretty good one also, so beware, especially you Microsoft 365 administrators.

Stay diligent my friends. Have a good weekend.

In 20+ years, we’ve never seen anything like this and we feel bad for all who are affected. Can 2020 just be over at Thanksgiving this year?

Unscheduled Service Interruption – November 17th, 2020

On November 16, the data center environment was attacked by a coordinated ransomware campaign. To ensure the integrity of customers’ data, the limited number of impacted servers were immediately taken offline. Upon further investigation and out of an abundance of caution, they took down their entire system to ensure further customer servers were not compromised. Their Technology and Information Security teams are working diligently to eliminate the threat and restore all customers to full capacity. The first priority is the safety and security of your data. They are working directly with law enforcement agencies to identify the entities involved in this attack. The law enforcement involvement is affecting the speed of standup and what can be communicated. It is expected to be back up today but the DC cannot guarantee any specific timeline. As more information is available, we will communicate directly with you.

Emails

This is one of the better fakes we've seen, as far as email formatting. They even spoofed the Intuit.com account well. Please stay diligent when opening emails, specifically vendor related ones. Always check the headers of the message if you're not 100% sure that it's friendly.

The header gives it away (this doesn't look like it's from Intuit)...
