What inspired you to start your business?
I have always wanted to be a business owner. Even when I was a kid, while most people my age played with dolls and played dress up, I would pretend I was a CEO or I would pretend I invented a money tree that would give you as much money as you wanted as long as you were kind and honest (wouldn’t the world be a much better place if that were real!?)
I have always been a very motivated and driven person, but working in the mundane corporate world drained me. I completely lost myself; constantly running the rat race…trying to do more and be better and get noticed only to fall flat and realize you’ll never be good enough and they’ll never appreciate you.
This prompted me to start Saga Marketing Solutions. I have a passion for marketing and for helping people. So I combined the two to offer ready to use marketing solutions for small businesses. This has given me the freedom to find myself again…to be driven and motivated to make a difference.

I think it’s time I introduce myself. My name is Sam Garrett and I started Saga Marketing earlier this year because I realized I felt stuck in my big corporate job and lost sight of what brings me joy.

I’ve always been a creative person with a knack for telling stories. I went to film school and worked in Hollywood making indie films for about five years before I got burnt out on really long days with little, but more often, no pay. I needed to pay bills so I transitioned to a corporate job where I fell into marketing and creative content creation. So, I took it a step further and got my MBA with an emphasis is marketing management.

I discovered that I truly loved marketing. I loved solving problems and connecting with people and communities. But over time, the corporate job became mundane, draining and less about the people and more about the bottom line. I no longer felt connected and I dreaded Mondays.

I got the idea for Saga Marketing because I wanted to get back to the people and tell their stories. Saga is a term meaning story (it’s also a combination of my names) and that’s the vision of this agency…to help small businesses tell their story and connect with their customers and communities.

For some small businesses it can be hard to know where to start when trying to promote your business or reach your target customer. The following tips are a great place to start:

1️⃣ Develop an online presence - this step can feel overwhelming, but what it really comes down to is simply getting out there. Create a Facebook business page, create a YouTube account, or even just posting more on your instagram can create a presence.

2️⃣ Determine what makes your business stand out - this is difficult for even the most seasoned of business owners, but this step can also be fun by giving you an opportunity to look at your business from the perspective of your customers. What is it that you do that provides them value and how is that value different from your neighbor?

3️⃣ Keep your brand consistent - this one comes down to really nailing what it is your business does, who your target customer is, and what problem you solve for them. Branding is much more than a logo and cool colors, but of course those matter too! When being consistent think about your voice, the vibe you want to send out into the world, your image and how you want customer to perceive you.

4️⃣ Market you business everywhere! - I cannot emphasize this step enough. The more exposure your business has the more opportunities there are for customers to find you. Ideally, with a decent budget, you should be using a combination of digital and traditional marketing to reach both online and local customers.

These four steps are the foundations for increasing your social presence and growing your audience/customers.

Step 1: this is where we will audit your current social presence. Before we can make a plan for the road ahead we have to first get a solid understanding of where you currently are:
* Which networks are you active
* Which networks are bringing you the most value
* Competitor analysis; how does your profile stand against your top three competitors
* Determine your target market or your ideal customer
*Identify key metrics to map your success and growth

Step 2: this is where things get really fun! Now it’s time to start creating or curating content for your business. Most small businesses jump right to this step, which is great, but with a little more planning you can achieve even more growth.

Step 3: data nerds unite in step 3! This step is when we get to track and analyze all the content you’ve been pumping out in step 2 and will start to bring to life those metrics you defined in step 1.
