🩸🫚Bloodroot Fairy
(Sanguinaria medice)
The bloodroot faerie is popular among other forest animals, and the physical nearness of this magical being imbues health to the creatures in its proximity. Ants follow them around as they go about their day, and deer bed down where the faeries sleep. Humans that have seen this faerie report a rejuvenating effect, their skin appearing unblemished, teeth feeling stronger, coughs and colds and other maladies disappear magically. These faeries are only visible in the spring, and retreat underground into the lairs of voles, creating side channels that are crimson red on the ceiling, walls, and floor.
Identification: These fairies are rather diminutive in size, topping out at 3”. They appear in the early spring as normal bloodroots, but gain mobility after their flowers have blossomed and the warm sun energizes their bodies. They whistle as they walk around amongst the leaves, imitating the songs of white-throated sparrows and other early migratory birds. Their lower limbs leak a sanguine fluid that marks their whereabouts like that of a snail. This trail does not last long, as ants and other insects relish the taste.
