A Note About Communication With Me: An increasing number of people are inquiring as to why I don’t respond via messaging on social media, especially regarding questions involving Newlook services. Most of my social media outlets (ie. Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, etc.) are connected to my blog and, because of partnering with The Ferrari Store, have a global reach. I simply don’t have the time to respond to each inquiry via messaging. Since these are social platforms, I’ve chosen to communicate my personality visually through the images and videos I’ve taken and other close friends have sent me. If you have questions about our service, answers can be found on our Fast FAQ page. If you would like to request an estimate of repair of paint damage, please submit your information online at www.newlookbodyworks.com/estimate. We will respond with FREE estimates in your inbox within 1 business day. All other business inquiries can be sent to [email protected].

October’s Dan’s Letter™ has the nerve to make your coffee break feel like a suspicious appointment you probably shouldn’t miss. Victor Sage returns in The Scarlet Veil, where a bouquet of white roses, a cream-colored invitation, and a line hidden in plain sight suggest someone may have been planning the future before the body even hit the floor 🎭 You’ll also get a mindset jolt for anyone who keeps mistaking discomfort for failure, a smarter way to plan a vacation around food instead of overpriced tourist nachos, a procrastination cure for people whose “later” has turned into a full-time con artist, and a business lesson about how a busy week can rob you blind while pretending to be productive. There’s also a true story about a famous comedian whose first “career pivot” involved handcuffs before applause, a car wash wake-up call, apple cinnamon cheesecake cups, and an animated driving test that goes criminally sideways. Read it before your attention wanders off and starts taking productivity advice from a refrigerator magnet.

Ads are running, posts are being published, emails are going out, reports are being generated, and somebody somewhere is proudly pointing at a graph that goes up and to the right. Everybody appears productive. Everybody feels occupied. The marketing machine is making noise.

The only awkward detail is that there aren't enough trips to the bank to deposit money.

That’s where the comedy begins. A campaign can be busy without being useful. It can generate impressions, clicks, views, likes, shares, comments, and enough colorful charts to wallpaper a conference room, while producing very little that actually improves the business. Activity is easy to manufacture. Response is harder.

Direct response marketing forces an uncomfortable question that polite marketing likes to avoid: What exactly is this supposed to make the prospect do? Not vaguely “remember us.” Not “engage with the brand.” Not “increase awareness.” What action should happen next? Call? Request a quote? Schedule? Buy? Return? Refer someone?

That’s why a real ad needs more than attractive design and cheerful optimism. It needs an offer. It needs a reason to act. It needs a clear next step. And it needs some way to determine whether the money spent produced anything more valuable than digital applause.

Here’s where owners get trapped. Weak marketing doesn’t always fail dramatically. It often fails very politely. It produces enough activity to keep everybody calm, enough statistics to keep everybody impressed, and enough jargon to prevent anybody from walking into the room and asking the question that tends to make marketing meetings suddenly very quiet:

Where’s the money?

Think about it this way. Suppose you hired a salesperson who spent six months telling you how many people saw him, how many conversations he started, how many business cards he handed out, and how much “awareness” he created. At some point you’d probably stop admiring the presentation and ask, “Wonderful. What did you sell?”

Marketing deserves exactly the same interrogation.

That doesn’t mean branding, design, visibility, or attention are useless. They can all help. But they’re ingredients, not the meal. Attention without an offer is just attention. Traffic without conversion is just sightseeing. A pile of leads with no follow-up is a very expensive collection of strangers.

The job of marketing is not to look active.

The job of marketing is to move somebody from where they are now to a specific action that benefits the business.

That’s when marketing stops being another monthly expense wearing a nice shirt and starts behaving like an asset.

If your members remember the parking nightmare better than the speaker, the meeting has gone off the rails. A business event should send people home with useful strategies they can actually put to work—and enough value that they don’t mysteriously develop “calendar conflicts” the next time your invitation arrives.

If you organize a chamber meeting, business association event, or local networking group, I’m offering a practical, entertaining presentation built for service-business owners who want better results from their marketing. Your members already know how to work hard. They don’t need another "motivational" speaker telling them to “stay positive” while pointing at a stock photo of somebody climbing a mountain in loafers.

My presentation, "How to Become the Best-Known Service Business in Your Market", tackles a costly problem: capable, hardworking operators doing excellent work while potential customers barely know they exist. Being good at the job and being remembered when the customer is ready to buy are two entirely different things. One gets applause from current customers. The other gets the phone to ring and money deposited in the bank.

Drawing on more than 35 years of running a mobile service business, I’ll show your members how to focus on the right local market, build recognition through a planned sequence of contacts, and give prospects a reason to pay attention before they need the service.

These are practical money making strategies they can begin applying without buying expensive software, hiring a giant marketing department, or turning social media into a second unpaid occupation that demands weekends.

Give your group a program that respects their time, understands how service businesses actually operate, and puts useful marketing strategies within reach. If you’re responsible for finding speakers, take a look at the presentation before somebody else drops another motivational casserole made of canned tuna onto your meeting agenda.

"December" by Collective Soul comes striding back onto the stage wearing its ’90s swagger like a favorite leather jacket that somehow still fits, with ringing guitars, Ed Roland’s unmistakable voice, and a chorus capable of making three decades quietly slip out the back door. Some songs survive their era; December seems completely unaware that time has passed at all. Turn it up and suddenly the calendar becomes highly negotiable.

A service business ad can be pretty, polished, boosted, and still bring in nothing but silence.

This quick fix explains why one clear offer beats a crowded sales pitch every time. If your ad is trying to sell every service you offer, it may be making the customer think too hard — and confused customers don’t act.

Watch it, then check your last ad before you spend another dollar feeding the Facebook machine.

Dan’s Letter™ just landed, and this month’s issue is like finding a trapdoor under your coffee cup: one minute you’re calmly pretending to be productive, the next you’re dropping through the floor with a biscotti in your hand and Victor Sage waiting below like this happens every Thursday 🎭 The Scarlet Veil brings a dangerous packet, the Serpent’s Eye, and the sort of theatre trouble that makes unpaid taxes look emotionally supportive. Inside, you’ll also find a reminder that waiting for life to calm down is a strategy best left to garden statues, a Puerto Rico escape beyond the brochure rack, a September reset for anyone whose summer diet included “because it’s vacation” as a food group 😏, a business lesson about why excellent work still needs attention, a true story about a boy fighting to speak before becoming a voice the world would never forget, the greasy little villain hiding inside your windshield, lemon-blueberry temptation, and a visual escape where reality apparently clocked out early. Read it before your attention wanders off and starts alphabetizing refrigerator magnets.

A postcard, one email, or a boosted post isn't a marketing system. It's the first tire on a four-tire truck.

Yet a campaign often gets declared dead after the first contact doesn't fill the schedule. Then the phone rings, an estimate needs writing, a job runs late, and the follow-up that was supposed to happen simply wanders off into the weeds.

Your prospect isn't sitting at home waiting for your offer to arrive. They're thinking about bills, groceries, work, a strange appliance noise, and perhaps a dog making a poor decision. They may notice your first message and forget it five minutes later. That doesn't prove it failed. It proves they have a life.

The costly part can happen after an inquiry: no fast response, no estimate reminder, no retention contact after the job, and no clear request for a review or referral. Then the advertising bill gets blamed for problems the process created.

This article explains why incomplete marketing often masquerades as ineffective marketing—and where to look before starting another shiny new campaign.
