Mark your calendars and get ready to support Special Olympics MD Howard County who will host their 1ST annual OVER THE EDGE fundraising event at the tallest building in Howard County: 6100 Merriweather Drive in Columbia, MD.

Special Olympics HoCo is partnering with Howard Hughes to put on this exciting event where 92 thrill-seeking fans will rappel down the 12-story building to the cheers of supporters on the plaza below in the new Merriweather District.

Funds raised from the event will be used by Special Olympics Howard County to directly support the year-round athletic training and competition opportunities provided for Maryland’s children and adults with intellectual disabilities at no cost to athletes or their families.

Be a part of Howard County’s HIGHEST event ever and go Over The Edge for Special Olympics Maryland – Howard County. Rappellers will descend down 12 stories of the new brand 6100 Merriweather to raise funds for the county’s largest year-round organization devoted to sports!

Two decades ago, on a crisp, snowy evening, we put in an impromptu call to then-CEO of Howard County General Hospital, Johns Hopkins Medicine Vic Broccolino, asking if we could run over to Merriweather Post Pavilion and shoot the fairly new holiday lights display. We didn’t have a good reason to do it, but it was so pretty with snow falling, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

A few years ago, the lights went dark for a year due to construction, and we finally put that footage to good use.

The prospects seem likely this may happen again this year. While we’re hoping for the best, we encourage you to enjoy a Virtual Symphony of Lights at home, cozy with a hot cocoa and some snacks, and make sure you support our community hospital this year as if you were in your car, waiting in line, shivering, and admonishing the kids in the backseat to stop pestering each other.
