We just finished up our PPC campaign for our landscaping client. In our initial call, the client was worried about lead volume and cost per lead being much higher than he was previously paying. Not only did we beat his previous agency's cost per lead 💪, but most of his campaign (5 of 8 months) was for high-ticket sodding jobs, not routine mowing services. With a MASSIVE ‼️10.15% average conversion rate‼️ for the entire season, his minimal monthly budget drove a massive ROI 🤑for his company this year. Check out our recently completed PPC case study here: https://alexfurfaro.com/service-area-ppc-case-study-lawncare-contractor/

If you are a local home service business looking for help generating leads 📶or need to upgrade your website so it converts at above average rates, feel free to reach out. Many of the small businesses we work with started out of their homes on shoe string budgets. Now they have multiple employees and their own office space as we've helped them grow substantially through SEO (AI integrated), PPC, and digital marketing.

One thing we do when we writing website content on "conversion oriented" service pages is provide not service info but also DIY content for how to help someone do it themselves.

A new client asked us to "take the DIY content off" as they were worried about potentially losing customers because of it.

Here's the reality:
1. Honesty & Transparency ✅
Customers don't want to be taken advantage of. When you are transparent and tell them how to do it themselves, you are offering a FREE solution. The altruistic nature will encourage them to trust you more. 🙏

2. Expertise ✅
When you can demonstrate a deep level of knowledge that goes far beyond fixing one issue, that shows expertise. For example, if you say to "check X, Y, and Z" while also fixing their issue, customers will recognize you are fixing their problem AND ensuring their whole system is working correctly, giving them peace of mind.

3. Searcher Intent 🧐
Service pages generally rank in Google for phrases like "hot water heater repair columbus ohio" or "near me" type phrases. These are conversion-oriented bottom of funnel keywords that make you money. People searching these phrases are interested in HIRING somebody to help them, NOT doing it themselves.

If they were interested in fixing it they would have searched "hot water heater not getting hot" or similar phrase to help troubleshooting their issue. 😉

DIY content on conversion pages only demonstrate you know your stuff and will have very little impact deterring conversions. 👍

Most websites convert at a 1-3% conversion rate, many of our clients convert at 4-6% or higher 📈, largely because of how we write content. Not only does it convert well, but it also ranks well in Google.

If you would like a free audit of your content, reach out and I'll be more than happy to explain how you can increase your conversions, no strings attached.

To all my SEO contacts and business owners, if your site is on WordPress, you or your website guy may need to check this setting.

We just launched a client's redesigned website and I just got a notification from Google search console that over 100 pages on a were set to no-index including many of their service pages AKA they would lose rankings/business very quickly.

After checking every setting imaginable (all were correct), I found a weird line of code relating to the rank math SEO plugin wordpress admin bar and found this "top admin bar" setting was improperly changing pages to no-index.

I turned it off and the code went away, fixing the issue!

Go to Rankmath SEO > role manager > Top admin bar and make sure this is UNCHECKED and save.

I tested this on 3-4 other sites and it happened on them too.

I submitted this ticket to them so they will likely update it but who knows.

If you need help with checking this, don't hesitate to reach out.

Recent win for a new client of ours:

We started managing a new service-based client's PPC campaign who was previously getting only 2-8 leads per month with their old agency. They sent us screenshots of their dashboard showing they received a grand total of 40 conversions over a 12 month period.
In just 2 MONTHS of working with us with the SAME BUDGET, we generated 38 conversions for them‼️🔥🔥

This included us having to start from scratch with a brand new campaign because the old agency refused to give over access to the ads they were running for "proprietary" reasons 🧐 (aka they didn't want us to see they were pocketing most of the budget ).

Now with us, our client has full transparency about:
✅ how much is actually being spent on Google ads vs our management fee
✅ what keywords we are targeting
✅ what all of the headlines and ad copies say (and input if they want to change them)
✅ what keywords we're getting clicks and conversions for
✅ negative keywords we're avoiding so we don't waste their budget
✅ what days of the week are getting the most conversions
✅ and so much more.

If you are running a PPC campaign and don't feel like you're getting the most out of it, shoot me a message and we can give you an audit of your current account or show you a report of how your competitors are performing.

Ok, I can't keep silent anymore. I hate being the negative person all the time, but the stuff I see in my industry is outrageous. I would really love to be positive and upbeat because digital marketing is really great and some form of it is a good strategy for any business, but these are the horror stories I hear all the time from business owners and it just makes me sick to my stomach.

If your company or someone you know is working with RevLocal for digital marketing, plan your exit as soon as you can. I'm tired of hearing about the absolute THEFT of "digital marketing services" they provide. It literally angers me (if you can't tell by this post).

1. In the screenshot, these are the metrics for 2 companies that recently reached out to me that have been with RevLocal for 12 and 14 months. Do you see how many total keywords they are ranking for and how much traffic they are getting? I don't think I need to say more than that is an utter DISASTER.

Their "SEO packages" are literally just a Yext subscription which they pay $150 per location one time and charge you hundreds monthly for. And they do nothing else. Zero. I know because I previousl was going to work with an ex-employee who told me that's exactly what they do, nothing else.

But business owners have the idea that you they "doing SEO for them" and are expecting to get leads to their business with what they're paying...

If these are the results after someone pays you for $6,000 worth of SEO work, then you are completely incompetent at SEO.

I could only image the outrage if this was an plumbing contractor, they said they would remodel your entire bathroom but instead all they did was replace your toilet and charge you $6k for it. That's the equivalent of what RevLocal is doing for SEO...

A contractor that would do that would be out of business so fast it's not even funny. But because it's "marketing" and kind of abstract, business owners chalk it up as a loss that didn't work.

2. Their websites are all custom coded cookie-cutter junk sites. Sure you could re-upload the site when you leave (they actually give it to you now, they didn't used to), but to do anything with it, you'll have to hire a developer to custom code everything. As an experienced person who's worked on website for 7+ years now, I can't even do anything with it. It's unfunctional ON PURPOSE.

3A. If you run Google Ads, they create everything in THEIR ACCOUNTS, which means all the VALUABLE data coming in from Google Ads they own it, and they will NOT transfer ownership to you so they can "protect our proprietary methods and ensure optimal performance for all our clients." All of the data in your Google ads account is EXTREMELY valuable because it would give you a starting point of data on WHAT'S WORKING, what isn't working, where you've got conversions, etc - and normally, you would just continue to optimize it overtime so they perform better.

Instead, they force you to start from scratch like you never paid them for a service. Which by the way, they are S**T at performing.

One of these companies was paying them $3000/month for ads and they received a maximum of 8 leads 1 month with the other months were 3-6 leads. That's $375-1000 PER LEAD, not even a closed deal. No wonder they want to hide their ads account because they don't want you to see how badly they're ripping you off and pocketing your money.

3B. Like the Ads account, they create the Google Analytics under THEIR accounts and will NOT transfer ownership. Again, all the valuable data coming into your website is GONE.

Like it's one thing if they were doing a good job and overcharging people, ok, I get that. But they prey on small businesses, they say they can do all these big things, they overpromise services then severely underdeliver. These businesses are expecting their lead flow to get better but instead they're just treading water and trying not to go under.

Please, please, please, run the other direction as soon as you hear the name RevLocal, or they were just acquired by Hibu, so you'll probably want to avoid them too. Shameful what these companies do.

And this is one of a hundred stories I have like this. 😓

If you are doing any type of paid media like radio or TV ads, these are especially critical for you, but applies to all businesses marketing.

Two things:

1. When doing any offline marketing where people do not know your brand but will see or hear 📢 your website spoke briefly, you may want to buy multiple domains that are very close to your brand name and forward them to your live site.

➡️➡️✅⬅️⬅️

This morning I went to test a new client website on my phone, I typed in what I thought their domain was, hit enter, and landed on a "this site cannot be reached" page. My initial reaction was a brief panic 😱 thinking "what happened," until I realized the domain was missing an "S" on the end. I have been working on their site all week and I messed this up - think about someone who's never heard of you before and how this could happen to them too.

If a user lands on a broken page, that is a bad user experience for them and it looks bad on your company.

🧐Think about your brand name, website, and how somebody might mistakenly mess it up. Then decide whether it makes sense to buy another domain with a slightly different spelling or not.

2. In incognito mode, Google your company name. Are you the number one company that shows up?

If you are not, this is also a bad ❌ experience.

✅Your website needs to show up #1
✅You should have a company "knowledge panel" associated to your Google Business Profile.
✅Your company's other social media platforms (FB, Insta, Youtube, LinkedIn, etc) should be in the top results as well.

If you haven't built out those social profiles because you "don't want to post on social media," do it anyway 💪.
It makes you look more professional.

These are 2 very serious issues that can harm your company's brand that are fairly easy to fix.

❌Not all traffic is created equal❌
I've said this before, I'll say it again:

You need the right people coming to your website so they convert and you earn their business, not random people from all over the country.

I was recently re-reviewing a proposal I put together at the end of last year for a potential client who went with another agency for SEO and PPC. When reviewing their online presence in a few of my SEO tools, I saw some interesting stuff.

One one hand, I saw pretty massive traffic growth in organic traffic 📈 and was briefly impressed.

On the other hand, they were visible for under 10% 📉 of their local area in the map pack. They are a company that requires local customers so having people in their city search their business is the utmost importance.

After spending another few more minutes looking at their site, I realized most of the "traffic gained" is likely irrelevant to their business 😱... They attained a bunch of "featured snippets" in Google, which "ranks you really high," but they are for "question-based" phrases anyone in the US can search.

For their primary city, they have less than 10 keywords on page one 😰... This was consistent with what I saw in maps and the extremely limited visibility in their local area for the primary city and near me keyword variations.

This is why you need to talk to your SEO agency and understand their strategy for MAKING YOU MONEY 💲💲, not just getting you more traffic.

✅Targeting "industry + city" phrases and bottom of funnel keywords should be the #1 place an agency STARTS when optimizing your site, not blogs❌.

While this company may have seen "over 100% growth in organic traffic," their conversion numbers from are probably close to the same as when I reviewed their company last year. A lot of marketing companies will tout their "hockey stick traffic growth" like you see in the graph, but these numbers are generally inflated from non-relevant users🤥.

Know the difference. 🧐

Just finished a client's monthly SEO report for May.
They hit new record highs for both organic traffic and phone calls to their business.
💥101 calls from the GBP
💥24 calls from the website (organic only)
💥36 form submissions

Over estimated $50,000 in new business just in May alone.

A 617 total visitors to their website in May with a total of 82 conversions
🔥= 13.3% conversion rate from their website!!!!

If you think a Google Business Profile is all you need, you're missing out on 50% of the conversions.

Started working with this company just over 2 months ago that had almost no presence in Google Maps. They now have significant visibility for 4 of their highest priority keywords totaling over 50,000 searches per month. ONE conversion per month pays for my SEO services for them. Think about the ROI when they go from generating 5-10 calls per month to 20, 40, 50+ (I have clients that get over 100 calls to 1 GBP).

If you are not getting enough calls to your business and you don't know why, DM me a "service + city" keyword for you (I.E. plumber + columbus) and I'll scan your business to see how you're performing for free.

It's been a long time since I've seen a discrepancy this large, but this epitomizes exactly what I've stated in the past about focusing on high-intent keywords instead of blogs for businesses.

What you see below is a screenshot from a small, local business. At face value, I thought "wow, this company is doing pretty good" when I saw how many keywords they were ranking for and the volume of traffic.

I clicked in to look at their keywords and noticed quite a few blogs ranking so I excluded all blog pages. What is left is what you see boxed in green on the left...

‼️ Outside of the blog, this company only ranks for 63 keywords and out of those 63, the 3 on page 1 are all their brand name, everything is page 2, page 3 and below‼️....
Literally 99% of their traffic is for informational keywords 👎❌. Even if the user was inclined to hire this company, if they live outside of the company's 30-50 mile service area, they are irrelevant to the business.
This is the exact definition of paying for SEO, seeing your traffic increase from a few hundred visitors/month to a few thousand, and wondering why you're not getting more forms submitted or calls 📞.

Clearly, the SEO company "did a good job" in terms of increasing the rankings of their website and getting them more traffic, but their strategy from Day 1 was completely wrong 🚫.
The map pack is a part of their business, yes, but those rankings are underwhelming as well.

For the right type of business, these would be great results📈.
For this business, the traffic is just a "vanity metric" that isn't helping their bottom line📉.

Focus on driving the RIGHT customer to your business, not ALL customers.

If you rely on Google business profile, the data visible inside the account is limited to only the last 6 months. Unless you are manually tracking all of this info, it would be really hard to see any trends in your data over such a short period of time, especially if you are a seasonal business.

Using a free tool called Google Looker studio and an API, we are able to see 16 months of data to be able to view progress on a year over year basis.

As an example, the top screenshot is what's provided by GBP and the bottom screenshot is my Looker Studio dashboard with over two-thirds more data where we can clearly see the seasonal trend for this company. This is way more valuable and insightful.

Year over year we can see a slight increase in calls here this spring compared to 2023 which we're hoping to continue growing as their maps footprint expands. These are just a few insights we can extract when analyzing the data from your GBP, Google Analytics, and Search console data, all in our dashboard.

Excited to see how high we can push their call volume after they received 79 calls last August.

If you would like to integrate your GBP and other Google properties into a dashboard for better data visualization, let me know.

04/18/2024

If you have ever hired an SEO company, you've probably been burned. Nearly every client that I've ever brought on has hired someone in the past, have been told they have been making progress by showing improved rankings, and so on. But when their website doesn't get more visitors and their phone isn't ringing, they don't understand why.

Here's the reality:
1. SEO companies lie.
2. SEO tools also lie.

What do I mean by that?

Image #1, the previous company is tracking 18 different keywords, initial rankings the company wasn't ranking at all, November 13th rankings were better, etc... The REAL truth they were "hiding" that didn't appear in their table was that most of the keywords they were tracking had zero search volume...

Why would a company target keywords that nobody is searching? Because they are easy keywords to rank for to show you "progress."

This is what many (not all) "guaranteed" rankings companies do, is they target super low or zero search volume keywords and they string you along because you think you're doing better.

As a caveat, I'll state "not all zero search volume keywords get zero search volume," because that's the truth, but the really long keywords they were targeting are pretty obvious to me they would get little to zero searches.

What about SEO tools? If you don't understand how to read them, then you're not understanding the "whole truth."

Image #2, another one of my clients website's started ranking well for the keyword "wealth management near me." You can see the tool says his site "gained 5,025 traffic" - this is not true. While "near me" keywords are important (for maps top 3 and organic top 10), the reality is this is a NATIONAL keyword for the entire US. If you do the math and account for the population of his city vs the entire US, this keyword gets searched about 100 times per month in his city, not the 5k/month the tool says.

There is a lot of nuance when it comes to keywords, volume of searches, location of searcher (especially with near me keywords), and the actual results in Google, but these are two very common ways I see business owners get taken advantage of because they don't understand the industry and they are being told the whole truth.
