Peabody joked one reason he moved from middle school to high school was simple: He was tired of playing “Hot Cross Buns.”

After years of teaching beginning musicians, he was ready for more challenging music - and a chance to explore the repertoire he loved.

Columbus Middle School Band Director Ryan Sims, pictured on the right alongside Columbus Champion and Columbus High School Band Director Jeff Peabody at a band conference in Chicago, had so many wonderful things about Peabody.

“Honestly, I think what I respect most about Mr. Peabody is his knowledge,” Sims said. “He really takes the time to find the best solution.”

FALL FOR THE ARTS ARTIST -- YARA RAMOS

You may already know Yara Ramos' artwork — even if you didn't know the artist behind it.

Her colorful murals can be found throughout Columbus. She's the artist behind the Columbus TRAX Creative District poster. She's a graphic designer, mixed-media artist, face painter and body painter. And through Havana Stone, she uses art and design to help tell the stories of businesses, organizations and communities.

Originally from Cuba and now based in Columbus, Yara brings more than 20 years of creative and design experience to work that's bold, colorful and often unexpected.

On Saturday, September 19, you'll find Yara and her artwork at Barbara Jean's during Fall for the Arts.

After a year marked by loss, surgery and recovery, Jeff Peabody returned to the place he loves most this summer - in front of his students, leading his band down 13th Street.

But getting back there took more than determination. It took a community willing to step up for the person who has spent decades showing up for others.

Meet Fall for the Arts musician Dr. Oscar Vazquez Medrano!

From Mexico to the United States to Slovakia, Dr. Oscar Vazquez Medrano has shared his talents as an accomplished pianist with audiences around the world — and we're fortunate to have him right here in Columbus!

Oscar is the owner and primary instructor at Vazquez Music Studio in downtown Columbus, teaches piano at Central Community College, accompanies choirs and frequently performs at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church.

A specialist in the music of Mexican composer Manuel M. Ponce, he also serves as an editor and guest artist for The Ponce Project. His performances feature a special focus on Mexican and Spanish music, along with the works of Chopin and Liszt.

It was another solid month for Columbus Champions in August. We welcomed Mel Jensen and Pat Sokol to the Champions lineup.
