🚨💰 COLUMBUS CITY COUNCIL APPROVES ANOTHER $1.7 MILLION FOR UPTOWN PICKLEBALL FACILITY!
COLGA, the price tag for Columbus' new pickleball facility keeps climbing! 👀🏓
During its Tuesday, October 13 meeting, Columbus City Council voted 7-2 to approve an additional $1.7 million toward the planned pickleball complex on Third Avenue in Uptown Columbus.
💵 The project, which was originally budgeted at approximately $7.1 million, is now expected to cost around $9.1 million.
The Columbus Pickleball Association has spent six years working to bring the facility to life. However, rising construction expenses have pushed costs beyond the original budget.
🏓 Why the additional funding?
Supporters believe the new complex could become a destination for regional pickleball tournaments, bringing visitors, hotel stays, restaurant spending and additional revenue into Columbus.
Association President Lance Tankerey explained that private fundraising has reached its current limits, with some donors waiting to see progress before contributing more.
🏛️ Not everyone on council was convinced.
Councilwoman Dr. Cathy Cook raised concerns about committing more money while other city projects are already facing funding challenges.
Meanwhile, Councilwoman Joanne Cogle expressed confidence that the facility could eventually generate enough revenue to help recover the city's investment.
Despite concerns, the additional funding was approved.
🗣️ NOW COLGA, WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!
💰 Is spending approximately $9.1 MILLION on a pickleball facility a smart investment for Columbus, or should that money go toward roads, public safety and other community needs?
