Please join us as Unheard-of//Ensemble presents 2 world premieres commissioned by the Johnstone Fund for New Music: “Don’t. Blink” (2021) by Elainie Lillios; and “Displacement Pressure” by Per Bloland. Ensemble pianist Daniel Anastasio will present Hyekyung Lee’s “Meet Me Halfway” (2013) for solo piano and fixed media. Unheard-of also will perform a new work by Mediaqueer, a new work by No Plexus supported by the Performing Arts Fund Netherlands, and movements from Christopher Stark’s concert-length work “Fire Ecologies,” (2020-2021) exploring America’s landscapes in the face of climate change.

Admission is free. Masks and proof of vaccinations will be required. Seating is limited to 75 people. Recommended for ages 9 and older. Parking assistance is available through the ParkColumbus app.

Ford Fourqurean (clarinet), Matheus Souza (violin), Issei Herr (cello), and Daniel Anastasio (piano) form the core of Unheard-of//Ensemble, a contemporary chamber ensemble based in New York City that is dedicated to the development and performance of new music by living composers.

Christopher Stark’s "Fire Ecologies" commission has been made possible by the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program, with generous funding provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The commission of No Plexus is made possible through support of the Performing Arts Fund NL. Unheard-of’s 2021-22 season is partially supported by the Alice M. Ditson Fund of Columbia University.

Nonprofit recital series Sunday at Central presents “String Quartets with Names” on Sun, Nov 7 at 3pm at the Columbus Performing Arts Center (Van Fleet Theater). Admission is free and masks are required.

Haydn’s Op. 33 No. 2 “The Joke” and Beethoven’s Op. 74 “The Harp” quartets will be performed by violinist David Niwa (Assistant Concertmaster, Columbus Symphony; and Artistic Director, Sunday at Central); Gyusun Han (Fourth Chair First Violin, Columbus Symphony); violist Belinda Reuning-Burge (member, Dayton Philharmonic; and member, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra); and Pei-An Chao (cello, Columbus Symphony).

Founded in 1994, Sunday at Central is a nonprofit chamber music recital series that offers intimate, personalized traditional chamber music concerts with internationally recognized professional musicians. What is a city without a soul, and what must that city do to find it? Composer, recording artist, drummer, activist, and educator Dr. Mark Lomax, II; saxophonist Edwin Bayard; bassist Dean Hulett; and poet Scott Woods embark on a one-time experience of jazz and poetry.

Beginning in a place of darkness and expanding out to the stars, “A Scheme for Brightness” looks for optimism and hope in a dark time. It brings together shredding rock guitar licks, delicate ambient melodies, and hypnotic polyrhythms, featuring a new arrangement of Julius Eastman’s epic work “Gay Guerrilla,” (1979) along with pieces by Nicole Murphy, Marti Epstein, and Hinge artistic director Dan VanHassel.

Boston-based combines cutting-edge contemporary and experimental music, seamless multimedia integration, and the innovative re-imagining of rock and pop songs. It lies somewhere between a classical chamber ensemble and a rock band.

This performance is part of the free “New Music at Short North Stage” concert series.
