⛅️ Shew-wee, all this rain lately up in northeast Georgia had us forgetting what that golden ball in the sky even looks like when it isn’t behind clouds. Here’s a flashback from a few weeks ago when Dr. Strickland spent the morning preg-checking beef cows at Elrod & Tolbert Angus Beef in Talmo. It was SUCH a pretty day to be outside working!

😎 Summer Student Spotlight

Our trio of students have been amazing already in their first couple weeks with us! Y’all met Cooper (right) already, as he started a week earlier, so today we wanted to officially introduce Anniston (left) and Amelia!

Anniston is a vet student at University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. She grew up barrel racing and showing livestock in her hometown of Perry, Georgia. During her summer at CLS, she hopes to assist in dystocia emergencies and gain more experience with equine medicine as well as farm animal pets. Local folks, y’all may see her at Comer Vet as well — Anniston is there one day a week!

“[Veterinary medicine] definitely started as a dream when I was little, but my passion for learning husbandry and how to doctor sick animals only grew when I started showing livestock in middle school,” she says.

Amelia grew up in Canon, Georgia, and is a student at University of Georgia. She comes to CLS with a background packed full of experience with livestock of all species, and she is eager to learn from the team what it’s like to be a vet serving rural Georgia farm families. Reproduction and nutrition are the areas of study that interest her most.

“Growing up in a rural community, I saw firsthand the need for large animal veterinarians and the impact they have on both animals and the people who depend on them,” Amelia says. “Through my experiences in clinics and on farms, I realized I wanted to be that resource: someone who not only treats animals but also supports producers and advocates for agriculture.”

Y’all be sure to tell them hello if they’re part of your farm’s appointments during the next few weeks!

‼️ Please note, this post contains images from a veterinary surgical procedure. Don’t swipe if you’re squeamish! ‼️

Dr. Anders and vet assistant Victoria got to tag-team in on a recent appointment with Dr. Chamlee! Dr. Anders ran anesthesia while Victoria provided an extra set of hands for this cryptorchid 🐖 boar castration. Cryptorchidism is a condition in which one or both testicles do not fully descend into the sc***um, and it tends to require surgical intervention. Since this pig owner’s schedule lined up on a day that Dr. Chamlee was stationed at our sister clinic, Comer Veterinary Hospital, we were able to utilize some of the surgical facilities there for this procedure.

Upon palpation, Dr. Chamlee confirmed that the boar indeed only had 1️⃣ testicle properly descended. She located the second one up in the abdominal area. After castrating the descended testicle with normal measures, she attempted to manually descend the second one. When that did not work, she went in surgically with a second incision to remove it.

If you swipe, you’ll notice a comparison photo showing the properly descended testicle and the one that was not. Since the second testicle remained in the body, where it is warmer, the testicle has a shriveled, almost “cooked” appearance. If not properly removed, retained testicles can lead to other health conditions. Not just in boars, either — other species can have testicles that don’t properly descend, and that need veterinary care to remove them!

Tomorrow is a big day for the CLS team. 🤗 We are excited to welcome our newest veterinarian on board! Dr. Isaac Ridings, DVM, will be joining our headquarters team based in Comer as a 🐐🐑 small ruminant reproduction specialist.

Dr. Ridings grew up in Cu***ng, Georgia, and studied biology at University of North Georgia before continuing on to his veterinary studies at University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. He grew up showing Boer goats at shows both in the Peach state and across the country, which ignited his desire to focus on large animal medicine as a career.

“I have always loved working with animals from a young age, and have always known that I wanted to become a vet,” he says. “I also grew up going to my Papa’s — mom’s dad — cow-calf operation. It was a small operation, but really made me want to do food animal medicine even more. I can attribute a large amount of my background to my Papa because he bought us our first show goats.”

Dr. Ridings and his brother showed those wethers and his days as an exhibitor took off. He became involved in the American Boer Goat Association, which was a vital influence in his choice to focus on small ruminants, particularly in the reproductive sphere. With Dr. Ridings’ specialties, CLS looks forward to offering advanced repro techniques for sheep and goats in the coming months as he gets established. Yes, folks, that includes the laparoscopic artificial insemination y’all have been asking us about for YEARS!

“I am extremely excited about working with CLS because of the culture that y’all have established and the client base that is open to building a relationship, and being committed to the common goal of making the best livestock whether on the show or commercial side of the industry,” Dr. Ridings says.

He will spend the first few months onboarding with CLS and riding with the rest of the vet team before getting assigned his own truck. We have been anxiously awaiting this next step for CLS, and cannot wait for y’all to get to know Dr. Ridings!

🔟 years ago this month, Tyson and Anna Strickland walked down the aisle. A week later, he walked across the stage to accept his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. By the time May 2016 ended, he was a husband, a veterinarian and a business owner, plowing ahead on not much more than ambition and prayer.

Starting a large animal-only vet clinic, fresh out of school? People told him he was crazy.

But a decade later, Dr. Tyson Strickland, DVM, is a husband, father, veterinarian and entrepreneur, continuing to prove the naysayers wrong every step of the way.

A huge thank-you to Mr. Davis’ class at Commerce High School for inviting CLS to teach today! 🍎 Dr. Chamlee spent a solid chunk of the afternoon giving students a crash-course in veterinary care for herd health.

She discussed topics including veterinary-client-patient relationships, vaccine protocols, nutrition management, and emergency care. Then, everyone got to stretch their legs for a bit and walk out to the parking lot for a vet truck tour! Dr. Chamlee showed how her vehicle is set up and talked about what she keeps on-hand daily versus what might get switched out depending on her schedule for the day.

It was a blast getting to speak with this smaller group about CLS and large animal medicine. Who knows … maybe y’all will see them as our interns in another year or two!
