🤝 The satellite vets joined forces in Baxley this past weekend to help things run smoothly during the Circle F Farms, LLC production sale! Dr. Josey and Dr. Brown were on premise to issue veterinary paperwork and assist as needed in other animal health capacities, should any have arisen. By all accounts, the weekend went incredibly well! The CLS team is grateful to the Circle F crew for choosing us to work with this sale season.

Peer into this horse patient’s mouth to see the difference teeth floating can make in your equines! 🦷 In the “before” photo, you’ll notice some teeth have uneven sharp points, and in the “after” picture, everything is nice and even.

Equine teeth continue to erupt throughout their lives, and their modern-day diets don’t always allow for natural grinding and evening out of their teeth as time goes on, especially compared to their wild counterparts! This can result in “malocclusion”, or misalignment, of the teeth. Equines with teeth like this, combined with any potential jaw misalignment, tend to develop ridges and sharp points. Such chewing patterns make eating difficult, and food is kind of key to horse, pony, and donkey health!

CLS has an equine dental float special going on through Nov. 30 that saves you 2️⃣0️⃣ percent on this procedure price. If you’re interested in obtaining an estimate and scheduling an appointment, please give us a call! This special is available through our headquarters team only, so haul-in appointments may be available at the vet’s discretion for those who live outside of our primary service area.

💡 Student Spotlight

October is a full month for externships at CLS! This week, we introduce y’all to Sarah Beth and Madeline, both students at University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine.

Sarah Beth raised 🦬 buffalo growing up and shows Quarter Horses in her home state of South Carolina. She loves equine sports medicine, but is excited to get more ruminant experience this month. Her undergraduate mentor encouraged her to pursue vet med as a career. Speaking of undergrad, Sarah Beth is also a two-time national champion collegiate equestrian, and her team was the reserve national champion!

Our local clients may also see Madeline at Comer Veterinary Hospital, as we are sharing her with our sister small animal + exotics clinic. She attended UGA VetCAMP and became enamored with livestock and large animal medicine, and the rest is history. When she’s not at work or studying, Madeline enjoys pickleball, exercising with her dog, pilates, and checking out new places for food and coffee.

Y’all be sure to say hello if they’re on your farm!

🌱 Rotational grazing, particularly for ruminants like cattle, sheep, and goats, is routinely lauded for being beneficial for land conservation. However, it can also help promote overall positive herd health!

Swipe through to learn about this style of pasture management and what it could do for your animals. If you’re interested in working with your vet team to implement rotational grazing, or simply want to know your CLS vet’s opinion on whether it might be feasible for your farm goals, please reach out to request a consultation!

For our Oglethorpe County producers — your sheriff’s office has this great resource and database! As severe weather could be in effect this weekend, which could cause damaged fences and pasture escapees, we thought it’d be worth a share.

This form is dedicated to the use of law enforcement personnel. In the instance your livestock has escaped your property, we use this information to ensure your livestock comes back home to you. If you have multiple properties with livestock, please complete one form per property.

Casual reminder for our natural service producers to PULL YOUR BULLS this month! 🤣

We’re kind of joking, but also not really — if your bulls are still working later in the fall and winter, you run the risk of calving during the hottest time of the year between July and September. This can put calves at high risk for heat stress and associated fatality.

Sometimes in large animal medicine, the vet team has to get a little creative! Dr. Josey and her summer intern, Sarah Campbell, got to play 🩻 Portable X-Ray Tetris to diagnose what was going on with this bull’s hoof and foot.

The two carefully finagled both the patient and the equipment around the chute to get the best images possible under the circumstances. They utilized a metal pole, positioned behind the bull’s back legs, to offer stability in the chute as they asked him to lift and reposition the affected foot in front of the X-ray plate. Feed sacks were recruited to offer better traction, helping the bull stand up straighter for diagnostic imaging.

Since usually it’s calves or pet bovines that get X-rays, this was a different the experience for us on a production breeding bull! But the CLS Northwest duo got ‘er done and were able to give the bull’s owner much-needed answers so he could decide how to proceed with the upcoming breeding season.

Yeehaw! 🤠

A moment of appreciation for vet assistant Lexi and the amazing scarecrow she designed for CLS this year! We also owe a special thanks to the assistant to the vet assistant, Mr. Allen Brown, for assisting in the construction and bringing her vision to life.

Our scarecrow is on display as part of the annual Scarecrows in the Cities contest hosted by the Madison County Chamber of Commerce! Y’all come through Comer and take selfies with them, and we’d be honored if you vote for us in the 🏆 official contest happening on the Chamber’s page.
