Thursday Throwback! A pre HDR shot of this room on 4x5 for marketing literature. This was a 28 minute exposure on color negative film. I had to consider the light values for the chandelier, the stage lighting, the top hats and the recessed lights in the ceiling, all while compensating for the reciprocity of a long exposure. All of these lights were on separate breakers and with help from the facility manager, started the shot with all lights on, then sequencing lights, the chandelier turned off first, then the stage lighting, and then the top hats and recessed lights. After that, in the dark had to walk around in the room to paint-in some extra light here and there. And now we have digital and HDR!

BTP- The Travelers Chapel - story Behind The Photo
The Travelers Chapel along Hwy 501 in Conway is a place to stop and reflect during your travels. It has been a part of the community since 1972.

I wanted to try to emulate digital stitching using film.
I chose the chapel as my subject to test this unique photographic technique. I pulled out on old Olympus OM1 camera, loaded with fine grain Tax 100 film, a tripod and a 35m Shift lens.
The procedure is to take three photos, framed for the top, middle and the bottom with the shift lens. The tripod was necessary to keep tight registration between all the frames. After processing the film, the frames were scanned into the computer. I took the center frame and developed it into a black and white image, then transferred the same settings to the other frames so they would match.

The three frames were then stitched together in Photoshop, then processed for the final image. This became a large file (149MB). The final print and framing was done at Art & Frame in Myrtle Beach. The final image is 20” x 26” in a gallery frame, and has remarkable detail, especially considering it was produced with 35mm.

This is one of my favorite images from Conway. If interested in this image, contact me. I also have an unframed print in 11x14”.
