Keeping the brain occupied is not the same as asking it to adapt. Crossword puzzles, familiar games, and well-practiced routines can feel mentally demanding, yet they often travel pathways the brain already knows. Jen Beyst, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Cognitive Function Development Institute (Brain Builders Health), draws a clearer line: useful cognitive work happens when demand changes and the brain has to reorganize in real time.

Her article, “The Difference Between Keeping the Brain Busy and Asking It to Adapt, walks through everyday examples, a short practice drill, and the neuroscience that underpins Cognitive Function Development Therapy (CFDT). The piece is especially timely for families, caregivers, athletes, and adults who want more than busywork for the brain.
Busy is not the same as adaptive
A crossword may ask you to retrieve familiar words. A conversation asks you to listen, hold meaning, respond, and adjust. Both can engage the mind.

Keeping the brain busy is not the same as asking it to adapt. Jen Beyst of Brain Builders Health / CFDI explains adaptive cognitive demand, CFDT, and what research actually supports.

In a recent episode of The Collective Cast, host Chris Damron sits down with David A. Snyder, CPA, to introduce the person behind one of Prescott’s established accounting practices — and to explain how his work goes beyond tax season.

David A. Snyder is the managing member of David A. Snyder CPA, PLLC, located at 325 South Montezuma Street in Prescott. He is a U.S. Army veteran and a Certified Public Accountant who has spent more than two decades in accounting, tax, and financial leadership. He also holds Enrolled Agent credentials and previously served as controller for three companies and as CFO for one.

That combination matters in the Quad Cities. Many owners in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, and Dewey-Humboldt already have a bookkeeper or a tax preparer. What they often lack is someone who can interpret the numbers, forecast cash, and help them decide what to do next.

Meet Dave A. Snyder, CPA, a Prescott-based accountant and fractional CFO helping growing businesses improve cash flow, forecasting, and strategic growth.

Closing is the beginning of a second set of decisions. Rick and Heidi Remakel of The Remakel Group at Realty Executives Arizona Territory walk Quad Cities buyers through insurance, taxes, utilities, PMI, and deductions after the keys change hands. This summary is educational only. It is not legal, tax, insurance, or lending advice.

The following steps routinely save Quad Cities homeowners money in the first year and beyond. Rick and Heidi Remakel use that checklist with new owners in Prescott, Prescott Valley, and the Quad Cities.
Revisit Insurance Within 30 to 60 Days
Shop homeowners coverage after closing. Bundling, deductibles, and settlement type can change the annual premium.

- Compare quotes instead of treating the closing policy as final.
- Bundle auto and home, raise a deductible you can actually fund, and confirm replacement-cost rather than actual-cash-value settlement on roofs and contents.

Rick and Heidi Remakel outline post-closing steps Quad Cities homeowners use to cut first-year costs on insurance, Yavapai County taxes, utilities, PMI, and deductions.

Dinosaur, car, star—and the other molds in the case.
Novelty chocolate is still poured in small batches at Gayle’s in Cottonwood. Good for kids, collectors, Halloween bowls, and anyone who wants the table to look like more than squares.

Molded pieces generally keep longer than fresh truffles. Ask which shapes are in this week.
