Opening a new business location? Don’t wait until opening day is close to start thinking about your sign.

Before we can manufacture it, there may be a site survey, design work, landlord approval, engineering, permitting, and revisions. Those steps can take longer than you expect.

Once you have a location and enough details to begin planning, bring your sign company into the conversation. Even if your opening is months away, that’s a good time to get started.

Can you install your business sign BEFORE the permit is approved? 🤔

We get this question all the time, especially when a business has an opening date coming up fast.

As tempting as it can be to get the sign installed and deal with the permit afterward, it’s usually not worth the risk.

If your jurisdiction requires a sign permit, installing before approval could mean having to modify the sign or, worst case, take it back down. Illuminated signs can also have additional electrical requirements and inspections.

When you're already juggling everything that comes with opening a new location, the last thing you need is an avoidable problem with the municipality.

Our advice: Get the approvals first. Install second. And plan for permitting early in the process.

How much does a channel letter sign cost?

It’s one of the most common questions we receive and one of the hardest to answer without seeing the building.

Even two signs that look almost identical can have very different installed prices. The final cost can depend on:

• The size and type of illumination
• How the letters are mounted
• The building’s construction
• Installation height and electrical access
• Permits, engineering, surveys, and equipment

If you’re looking for an accurate channel-letter quote, send us three things:

📍 The property address
📸 A clear photo of the storefront
🎨 Your logo or proposed sign design

Those three items give us a great place to start.

Opening a new location? Your signage plan starts before customers ever reach the front door.

Think about the entire customer journey.

They’re driving down the road — can they find you?
They pull into the property — do they know where to go?
They park — is the entrance obvious?
They walk inside — can they easily navigate the space?

Most people think first about the big sign on the building. But a complete signage plan can include monument signs, channel letters, parking and directional signs, window graphics, door hours, ADA signage, interior branding, wayfinding and even temporary grand-opening signage.

The key is planning it before it becomes an opening-day emergency.

In this video, I walk through the signage you should be thinking about when opening a new commercial location.

A simple way to approach it:

👉 Start at the road. Walk the same path your customer will take all the way through your building and ask, “What do they need to see next?”

That’s your signage plan.

What type of sign is right for your business?

There are a LOT more options than most people realize.

Channel letters, illuminated cabinets, monument signs, pylon signs, dimensional letters, awnings, window graphics, digital message centers and that’s just the exterior.

Inside, you may need lobby signs, directional signage, wall graphics, ADA signage and more.

But here’s the important part:

Don’t start by picking the type of sign you like. Start with what you need the sign to accomplish.

Your building, visibility from the road, budget, brand and local sign code all play a role in determining what makes the most sense.

Start with the goal. Then choose the sign that gets you there.

What happens when a franchise with 100 locations decides to rebrand?

Changing the logo is the easy part.

The real challenge is getting that new brand implemented correctly and consistently across 100 different locations.

Before new signs start shipping, you need to know what’s already installed at each location. Then come surveys, new signage standards, landlord requirements, permits, production schedules, installation coordination and keeping track of where every single location stands.

That’s why a large-scale rebrand needs to be managed as one coordinated rollout, not 100 separate sign projects.

Because a successful rebrand isn’t just about getting the new logo right.

It’s about making sure customers see the same brand at every location.

What’s the best sign for a franchise location?

It depends.

A sign that works perfectly at one location might be completely wrong for the next, even for the exact same brand.

Different buildings. Different visibility. Different landlords. Different local sign regulations.

The goal isn't simply to install the same sign everywhere.

It's to keep your brand consistent while making sure each location is visible, compliant and on-brand.

Here's what we look at. 👇

Do you need a permit for a business sign?

In many cases, yes, and it's something you want to figure out early.

Depending on where your business is located and the type of sign you're installing, there may be rules covering size, height, placement, illumination, electrical work, and more.

You may also need landlord approval before the permitting process can even begin.

The biggest thing to remember is that every municipality is different.

So if you're opening a new location, don't wait until your sign is ready to install to start asking about permits.

A little planning upfront can save a lot of time and frustration later.

If you're leasing a commercial space, who actually controls your signage, you or the landlord?

Usually, you're responsible for buying the sign.

But that doesn't necessarily mean you get to choose whatever you want.

Your landlord or lease requirements may dictate the size, colors, placement, illumination, and even the type of sign you're allowed to install.

Then you still have the local municipality's sign regulations to deal with.

That's why it's important to check the requirements before spending time designing your sign.

Know what you're allowed to install first. Then design around it.

It can save a lot of time, money, and frustration when you're trying to get a new location open.
