“You’re not cheap.” That’s what a lovely young business owner told me on a call yesterday. When I began to explain, he clarified that he meant this as a compliment. Having found me on a video on “how to look expensive”, he recognized my own rates were proof that branding works.
But there’s a bigger story:
I spent 10 years in an agency where a brand identity might run you $40k— not the $4,800 I charge. I spent 2 years as Creative Director at a business that didn’t even blink at the $400/hr rates for the marketing company they hired. Not cheap.
When I started my own business, I thought that’s how branding and design had to be. I was an elitist. I was prioritizing my ego over what the client really needed. “If you don’t spend 40 hours obsessing over every detail of a logo, how do you know it’s good?”
But I realized that the people I want to help don’t need a 40-hour logo. Nor can they afford it. (And if they could, they’d probably be better served spending most of that money elsewhere in their business!)
I refuse to gatekeep good branding. Because branding is a tool for making money. And the people who need money most, usually can’t afford it.
So while I might make a lot more money myself working with the big businesses with the big budgets, I get more fulfillment helping the small businesses punch above their weight.
And even for them, sometimes “I’m not cheap”. So I create as much free content as I can, because I want you to grow with or without me. The more people I can help the better. If my YouTube videos give you enough guidance to start making money, that’s a fu***ng win.
And if you want to hire me to take it to the next level when you eventually do have the budget… well, that’s great too. :)
