International Day of Charity provides a platform for charitable opportunities to take place. This holiday reminds us that simple acts of charity can alleviate the worst effects of crises and create more inclusive and resilient societies. The date for this holiday was chosen by the Hungarian civil society to commemorate Mother Teresa's death and to honor her tireless work to help others overcome poverty and suffering. Today, in the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development adopted in September 2015, the United Nations recognizes that eradicating poverty is the greatest global challenge and a requirement for sustainable development. The Agenda also calls for a spirit of strengthened global solidarity, focused in particular on the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable. The UN hopes that charitable acts will help achieve the goal of ending poverty for all.
