“KICHU KOTHA BOLAR CHILO” EP 110 “ভাষার জন্য আমরা কিছু করি না !”
Bengali Bhasha Divas, celebrated on February 21, commemorates the 1952 Language Movement in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), where students and activists sacrificed their lives to establish Bangla as a state language.
On February 21, 1952, students of Dhaka University and other protesters defied restrictions to demand recognition of their mother tongue. Police opened fire, resulting in the deaths of martyrs like Rafique, Jabbar, Salam, and Barkat. This massacre ignited the Bengali language movement, which became a cornerstone of Bengali identity and a catalyst for the struggle for Bangladesh's independence. To honor the sacrifices of the language martyrs, UNESCO declared February 21 as International Mother Language Day on November 17, 1999.
We at the OTT Platform THE ACE FM are extremely proud to welcome another new wordsmith on the show “কিছু কথা বলার ছিল” “. Her name is Ms. Srija Ghosh and the name of her poem is “ভাষার জন্য আমরা কিছু করি না !”. Bhasha Divas use to be observed with immense pride in Bangladesh, West Bengal, and worldwide to promote linguistic diversity but lately, the Bengali’s themselves have increasingly been neglecting their language. The poet rues this sad truth in her poem in this episode of the Audio Series and tries to remind the Bengalis about the sacrifices that had been made on this day 74 years ago.
The poem has been renditioned by none other than famous rhapsodist Mr. Biplab Chatterjee, a key member of our team of the series.
