Well… here we are again.

The last set of brakes 🙌

After three rounds, I can honestly say I’m feeling a lot more comfortable with the basics—taking a tire off and putting it back on, knowing which tools to reach for, and understanding how all the brake components fit together.

What’s been interesting (and a little surprising) is how often we’ve run into parts that need replacing—usually meaning a special order—or situations where things aren’t quite as consistent as you’d expect. For example, two different types of front brake hubs… on the same car. That definitely sends us down a research path.

I guess that comes with working on a car of this age.

Still, I find all of it fascinating.

Hoping to have the full brake system wrapped up this weekend… but we’ll see how it goes 😊

Reassembled the rear brakes with all new components 🙌

Fresh shoes, springs, and cylinders.

Now we’ve moved on to the front brakes starting with the passenger side.. Disassembled everything, cleaned it up, took a close look and ordered some new parts.

Hoping to update the outer seal assembly to a more conventional dust cap. We’ll let you know how that goes!😅

Slow going but progress being made…and I’m learning a lot about this gem of a vehicle.

Brake system progress on the MG TD

We’ve completed the rear brake teardown and rebuild: brake drums and hubs removed, old brakes and backing plates off, everything cleaned, bead blasted, and painted. The backing plates are now reinstalled with new hardware, along with new brake shoes, springs, hold-downs, wheel cylinders, and fresh axle seals.

Every nut and bolt was chased to make sure the threads were solid before reinstalling the drums, hubs, and tires.

One thing that has surprised us is how many different thread standards have shown up on this car — British National Fine (BNF), Whitworth, and SAE, sometimes on the same assembly.

Up next: the master cylinder is prepped for replacement, front brake parts are on order, and we’ll be installing the new master cylinder along with replacing all of the hydraulic brake lines.

Lots of learning for me, and enjoying being hands on in bringing this car back to life.

And yes (if you’ve read this far 😁)… I do know what all these terms are. I know…I’m surprised too! 😉

A few days ago we picked up our 1953 MG TD at in Wichita, Kansas, and I’m still smiling about it.

She’s a project car… not running right now, but she will.

And I can’t wait to learn as we restore her. Looking forward to being hands on in this project.

Isn’t she sweet?!

I suspect will replace Amazon deliveries at our house! 😄

Here’s to a new adventure with a very special little car.
