Each frog and toad in the eastern US calls at a different pitch. Like radio stations — each species owns a frequency band, and they rarely overlap.

🐸 Start at the top and work your way down:

Spring peepers sit highest. The sharp, high-pitched pulse that hits your ear like an alarm from across a field.

American toads trill lower — a single sustained note that can last half a minute without a breath.

Gray treefrogs drop below that. Slower, more musical. Like a bird that gave up on melody.

Green frogs pluck a single note near the water's edge. The banjo string sound you've heard but maybe never placed.

Bullfrogs anchor the bottom. The bass note you feel in your chest when you stand near the water after dark.

They evolved these separate channels so they wouldn't drown each other out. If two species overlapped, neither could attract a mate. So they don't.

The spring chorus isn't noise. It's organized. Each pitch has an owner.

🌿 How to hear it:

- Stand near any pond, ditch, or retention basin after dark this week — the chorus peaks between nine and midnight
- Start with the highest pitch and try to isolate each layer working downward
- Warm rainy nights are loudest — cold snaps thin the lineup
- Each species starts and stops at different points through the season

Your neighborhood pond is running a broadcast system older than most of the trees around it. 🌱
