I was somewhere between seven and nine years old the first time a story made me feel something I hadn't felt before.

It was an old animated version of The Hobbit, playing on an ordinary afternoon the way things just seemed to play back then, a kid on a couch with the television already on. I don't remember most of what was on that year. I remember that film.

What stayed with me was the door. A hobbit hole, round and green and content, a life built around staying exactly where it was, until a knock turned into a decision, and the decision turned into a road leading somewhere none of it was built for.
