I’m a little late sharing this one, but our August edition deserves its moment. 🤍

Brody and Brittany Hughes first met as students at Dawson County High School. Today, they’re raising their three boys in the same community that raised them, serving Dawson County through its schools, their church, and the relationships they’ve built here over a lifetime. Their story truly is one of faith, family, and purpose close to home.

This edition also marks a new chapter for Neighbors of Dawsonville. It is Kat Bonilla’s Katina Gattes Bonilla very first issue as our photographer! Kat captured the Hughes family so beautifully, and I couldn’t be happier to officially welcome her.

🐾 I Need Your Help!

Many of you know me through the magazine and my involvement in our community. Today, I’m asking for your support with something that’s very close to my heart.

I recently created Fresh Leash on Life, and my hope is that it becomes more than just an Instagram page.

I want it to be a place where our community celebrates animals, shares acts of kindness, highlights volunteers, features happy adoption stories, recognizes local rescues, and inspires more people to get involved.

If you volunteer, foster, walk shelter dogs, rescue wildlife, support local rescues, or simply have a heart for animals, this page is for you.

This isn’t my page to run. It’s our community to build.

I’d love for this to be an interactive space where we celebrate the incredible things happening for animals in our community. If you’re volunteering, fostering, walking shelter dogs, helping a rescue, celebrating an adoption, supporting a local animal organization, or sharing a story that encourages kindness and compassion toward animals, tag ! We’d love to feature your photos and stories so others can celebrate with you and be inspired to get involved.

This one’s personal. 💙

The Pearce family was my very first client when this magazine started, and years later, they’re not just sponsors, they’re friends. So getting to feature them on the cover this month means more than I can really say.

Wesley & Mallory’s story started with a secret conspiracy (their sisters’ idea, not theirs 😄), and today they’re raising three kids on an old tree farm, building businesses, and showing up for this community in ways big and small. Faith, grit, and a life fully lived, that’s the Pearce family.

Meet Hampton.

I spent part of my weekend walking shelter dogs, and this sweet boy stole my heart. Hampton has been at the shelter since 2024, and I truly cannot understand how he is still waiting.

He is happy, loving, affectionate, and eager to please. We passed another dog during our walk, and while he reacted at first, he redirected quickly with guidance and treats. The next time, he handled it beautifully.

He is food motivated, willing to learn, and has so much potential with the right person and consistency.

You can also take shelter dogs on a “doggy day out,” which means a fun break like a car ride or even a stop at Dairy Queen for a free pup cup—something I got to do, and he loved it.

Sometimes helping is simple. A walk, a share, or helping the right person find the right dog can change everything.

Today I walked into the shelter and said, “Give me the dog who needs a walk and one-on-one time the most.”

They gave me Punchy.

He was so sad in his kennel. Not barking. Not jumping. Just sitting there quietly, like he had given up a little.

But after just under 2 hours outside, he came back to life.

Punchy was amazing on our walk. He didn’t pull, didn’t react to other people or pets, knew sit and come, and took treats so gently. Once he felt safe, he was full of love, snuggles, and life again.

Punchy has been at the shelter since 2022 and he needs the right home! Calm, patient, and no kids, just to be safe. He is not a dog to rush. He is a dog who needs trust first.

But once you earn that trust, this boy is so worth it.

If you think Punchy may be a fit, please request to walk him. Spend time with him. Let him show you who he really is outside of a kennel.

And even if you can’t adopt, please consider volunteering to walk dogs. Today reminded me how much one walk, one person, and one little bit of time can mean to a shelter dog.

Punchy was sad when I met him, and full of life when I left him.

I moved to Dawson County at the end of 2022 knowing almost no one. Within two months I launched a magazine. Looking back, I don’t know if that was brave or just a little crazy. Probably both.

What I didn’t expect was what this community would give me in return. Not just support for the magazine, but the kind of people who show up for you. Who believe in you before you’ve fully proven yourself. Who makes you feel like you belong.

Three years later, the June edition is in mailboxes across Dawson County and I’m on the cover.

I don’t take that lightly. Not even a little bit.
To everyone who has been part of this journey, thank you. You changed me. ❤️
