Free Comic Book Day | First Saturday in May

Up next in our 'Every Day is a Celebration' series is a holiday that all ages are bound to enjoy. From nostalgic characters to epic new stories, Free Comic Book Day offers something for everyone!

Here's an inside look at the artist's inspiration for this illustration:

"A long-standing tradition in our family, FCBD is held on the first Saturday in May each year. Publishers print a wide variety of comic books, which are given out for free at most comic shops. Stop in on the 2nd this year! Our local shop allows a whopping 8 comics per guest. As a bonus bit of DIY fun, later we check out a Button Press Maker Kit from our local library, and create buttons from the pages we like best. We’ve also collaged them onto blank postcards to send to friends. Great crafting material since it’s free!"

Here's why artist Andy Kittles chose this holiday for a special tribute as part of our 'Every Day is a Celebration' series:

“My good friend Steve, a world-class professional sax player based in Atlanta, is depicted in this illustration. As a kid, I could hear him playing jazz, blues, and rock tunes on his horn four houses down the street from ours. He inspired me to take up the sax. I still enjoy playing it today.”

Hello, spring!! 🌺 We’re back with another amazing design from our Every Day is a Celebration project. What’s your favorite flower?

“As the cold winter fades and spring starts to chirp, March brings forth a glimmer of hope. The warmth of spring is on the way as the seasons change, bringing a breath of fresh air. That is my overarching theme for National Flower Day.

My deep appreciation for flowers and the powerful symbolism they hold developed while I worked at a local floral shop in college. Their beauty transformed wedding venues as couples said their vows. As they were proudly displayed, the florals served as a reminder to cherish every moment.”

What does Love Your Pet Day mean to this designer? 💭

"Sometimes you just feel like a fish out of water…well, fish need love, too, sometimes! Our pets are always there for us, especially when we’re feeling weird, misunderstood, or out of place. That love can feel so huge, even when we’re not able to express it through words. I wanted to illustrate how big and precious, albeit weird, the relationships with our pets can be."
