Artist Spotlight: Maria McGinnis
This month, we are thrilled to feature Maria McGinnis, a versatile printmaker (and painter) whose work and life story are deeply intertwined with the concepts of resilience and family. Maria's recent work will be featured in the Project Space at High Street Gallery on June 12 from 6-8 pm-- mark your calendars and be sure to check it out!

You can find Maria's available works at: https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/maria-mcginnis

A bit about Maria:

Q:How did you first get into printmaking?

Maria: I graduated from Wright State University in 1995 with three concentrations for my BFA: Printmaking, Painting, and Drawing. I've been focused mostly on painting and drawing since graduation.

Q:What's your favorite printmaking method, and what attracts you to it?

Maria: I've focused on woodcuts recently, with layers and multiple blocks. I'm working with colors and layers. I do love intaglio, too. I'm still experimenting!

Q: What's your favorite part about being a member of the Dayton Printmaker's Cooperative?

Maria: I love being a member because it's such a special group with a rich historical background. I really enjoy working together with other printmakers during workshops and events.

In 2025, the Dayton Printmakers Cooperative was awarded an
"ArtSTART" grant from the Ohio Arts Council for our workshop series, "Building and Nurturing Community through Printmaking". This week we will begin our second member workshop for professional development. "Textures in PRINT: A Collagraph Journey" will meet for four weeks and be taught by Professor Kim Vito, Wright State University, Dayton, OH. Participants will learn how to collagraph, work with the Tetra Pak approach, and operate our Glen Alps press. Participants from our recent intaglio workshop are still "pedalling" away!

"In this 4-week hands-on workshop, participants will explore the art of collagraphy – a technique pioneered by artist Glen Alps. This versatile printmaking technique uses textured surfaces and smooth materials to create unique printing plates. You will learn how to design, assemble, and ink your own matrixes. "

We are thrilled to feature Kettering-based painter and printmaker, David Leach, for this month’s Member Spotlight. With an MFA from Ohio University and a distinguished career teaching drawing and printmaking at Wright State University, David brings a wealth of technical mastery to our community.

David describes himself as a "graphic-oriented" artist, and one look at his portfolio explains why. His work is a masterclass in the power of the line. By layering lines of varying dimensions and weights, David creates abstract compositions that pulse with movement and redefine the space they inhabit.

Member Spotlight Deep-Dive
More about Jenna Suggs and the D.P.C:

***How did you first get started with printmaking, and what drew you to your favorite printmaking medium? Do you prefer intaglio or relief printing? ***

Jenna: I first got started with printmaking during my Bachelor of Fine Arts program. I entered school primarily focused on painting... However, after an introductory course in Printmaking, I felt unexpectedly more drawn to it. I quickly realized that I enjoyed relief printing, and wood cuts in particular. I love the physical process of cutting into the wood, the mark-making, and the texture of the grain of the wood that sometimes comes through in the final print.

***What themes or subjects are you currently exploring in your work?***

Jenna: Color is a big theme in my current work. I'm looking at the way layered colors interact with one another through transparency and overlapping layers. I'm interested in the way shifts in value can create depth and movement within an image.

**What is your favorite part of being a member of The Dayton Printmakers Cooperative? ***

Jenna: A few of my favorite parts of being a member of DPC is having access to a functional studio 24/7, being motivated by seeing and hearing about fellow members' work, and the many opportunities that come along with my membership like print sales, exchanges, and exhibitions!
