I have been asked this several times in direct messages recently, so I'm addressing it here....
1 | If you are trying to start out in the motorsports industry as a photographer or media, please ๐๐ข ๐ก๐ข๐ง request credentials on a media outlet's behalf that you are not associated with or have confirmation from that specific media outlet to request credentials.
2 | I ๐๐ข ๐ก๐ข๐ง have multiple credentials to hand out for beginner or inexperienced photographers, especially if I don't have a working professional relationship with you. I get one credential for myself through my media outlets that I supply work to on assignment. Credentialed media outlets are limited to just a select handful through the track or series.
Networking in this industry is important and can open many doors when you follow the proper steps and procedures.
Tracks and racing series pay attention to these matters and may contact media outlets to verify credential requests. For that reason, it is best to follow the process correctly. They do not typically forget your name when you give them false information for credential requests.
If you are not affiliated with a legitimate media outlet but would still like to photograph races as a fan, please do so from the general admission areas where photography is permitted. Dirt track racing usually provides GA locations where fans can capture great images while gaining experience and developing their skills.
Media credentials are intended for individuals who are working on a specific assignment for a recognized media outlet at the track.
Working within the "media" industry, comes with lots of "no's", but persevere and you never know what networking can do for you.
When I started 10 years ago, I had reached out to 5 or 6 media outlets after building a portfolio of samples of work, before I got 1 yes - Don't become discouraged, build your portfolio as a fan, and work your way up the ladder. Getting credentialed and working with a legit media outlet can take months or years before you'll hear a "yes".
Please share with a photographer who's trying to get their feet wet, but doesn't know where to begin.
