The San Diego Press Club is honoring excellence in journalism on October 28. Here’s a sneak preview of one of the honorees and information to purchase tickets.

Join us on Oct. 28 for our 52nd Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards as we celebrate this year's Harold Keen Award recipient Ginny Creighton for Outstanding Contribution in Journalism.

Creighton has worked for KGTV for 45 years, her entire professional career. Creighton, daughter of a United States Navy pilot and United States Navy nurse, grew up as the middle sibling of three with beagles. Creighton notes one of the dogs flew with the Blue Angels “Fat Albert” support aircraft.

Creighton earned a communications degree from Pepperdine University, and went to work at KGTV, first as an assignment editor. After what she describes as “decades” on the assignment desk, she shifted into her current role as a photojournalist.

The award, named after pioneering San Diego print and broadcast journalist Harold Keen, will be presented to Creighton by Keen’s granddaughter Lisa Keen Richard, accompanied by her siblings David Keen and Valerie Keen Styron.

Devastating news for journalism. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is shutting down. This action after Congress passed a bill cutting $1.1 billion, previously approved, from CPB.

“These cuts will significantly impact all of our stations, but will be especially devastating to smaller stations and those serving large rural areas,” PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger said in July. “Many of our stations which provide access to free unique local programming and emergency alerts will now be forced to make hard decisions in the weeks and months ahead.”

The recently signed tax cut and budget bill took back $1.1 billion in previously approved funds.
