Last summer we worked with Rocky Mountain PBS to develop a story about Colorado's struggling child care system, those most impacted by it, and possible solutions.

We connected the reporting team to voices at Denver's Early Childhood Council (including then CEO Shelby Mattingly), set up visits with child care providers, and invited families to share their stories.

This issue matters even more today than it did then. The journalists involved dedicated time, care and thought to telling this story the right way. We are glad to have been a part of it.

“What we see happen over and over is that the childcare programs are not able to charge the true cost of care, and folks are already paying more than they can afford. So that's a crunch coming from both directions,” said Mattingly.

“We do know that the effects are already happening in real time and that kids and families are right now not able to access care who need it. And we're worried about the compounding impacts of that over time."

A new documentary explores how raising a young child in Colorado is increasingly costly and inaccessible.
