Colorado's Missing Museum

On May 20 2026 the Colorado Hispanic History Museum launches on the Auraria Campus in Denver, approved as a Signature Initiative of the America 250 Colorado 150 Commission.

The Hispanic and Latino community has been present in what is now Colorado since the Spanish colonial era of the 1600s, three centuries before Colorado became a state. The San Luis Valley was settled by Hispanic farming families whose land grants predate American statehood. The acequia irrigation systems still operating in southern Colorado were built before anyone in Washington knew the territory existed.

Hispanic Coloradans built the cattle ranching economy of the south. They mined the coal that fueled Pueblo's steel industry. They grew the crops that fed the state. They wrote the Colorado Constitution alongside Anglos at the 1875 convention.
And for 150 years their history has had no dedicated permanent home in the state they helped build.

That changes on May 20.

The museum is situated at Auraria specifically because the campus sits on land that was part of the original Auraria settlement, one of the two communities that became Denver in 1860.

This is a big deal. Tell someone.
