What makes a great place?

It’s not just beautiful design or big ideas. It’s listening to the people who know a place best.

After attending International Placemaking Week in Detroit, our Senior Associate, Sean Billisitz, sat down with CEO Sarah Cullen to reflect on some of the most impactful ideas that emerged throughout the week.

Their conversation explores why the most successful placemaking efforts begin with community voices, what Detroit’s resilience can teach cities everywhere and how creating meaningful places starts by understanding the people who use them every day.

As communicators, planners and place advocates, we’re reminded that our role isn’t to speak for communities. It’s to help create opportunities for communities to shape their
own future.

The best way to understand a place? Experience it.

Our team had the opportunity to join the Denver Architecture Foundation for a tour of Lowry B**r Garden, exploring the transformation of the former Lowry Air Force Base into a thriving community destination.

One of our favorite takeaways was learning how the project was shaped by the community itself. Developers asked neighbors what they wanted to see in the space, and the answer was clear: a neighborhood b**r garden. The result is a thoughtfully designed "third place" that brings people together while honoring the site's history.

Thanks to the Denver Architecture Foundation for an afternoon of learning about adaptive reuse, placemaking and the stories behind one of Denver's most unique gathering spaces.
