red performing ensemble presented by Music Under The Stars is the Des Moines Metro Concert Band, which performs all genre of band and wind ensemble music, including classical transcriptions and original compositions, marches, overtures, jazz, and popular selections. Also, small groups performing jazz, chamber, and world music perform before the Metro Concert Band. Music Under The Stars is provides professional quality music – the Metro Concert Band and the other ensembles are comprised of musicians who play with the Des Moines Symphony, the Des Moines Metro Opera, the Des Moines Big Band, and for touring shows at the Civic Center and the Meadows Events Center, among other venues – for free to the public. In a state known for its heritage of band music and outstanding music education programs, the Des Moines Metro Concert Band is the only professional concert band, and it is accessible to all citizens regardless of income. The concerts have been held every summer since 1947 on the west grounds of the State Capitol (with the exception of 1977-78, when they were moved to Nollen Plaza), and are a favorite summertime tradition in central Iowa.
