🇵🇱🇮🇹 Poland and Italy share a unique bond, as they are the only countries in the world that mention each other in their national anthems. This is a reference to a time when both nations fought for their freedom against the powerful Austrian Empire.
The Polish anthem was written by Józef Wybicki in 1797, right in Italy, when Poland had completely disappeared from the map due to the agreement of three partitioning powers. One of them was the Austrians, against whom the Poles fought alongside the Italians.
The Polish anthem lifted spirits and heralded a return to the homeland. The Italian anthem was written fifty years later, in 1847. Its author, Goffredo Mameli, recalled in it the Italian-Polish brotherhood of blood and the solidarity of both nations during the most difficult moments in history.
