Big ad tech news this week. A federal judge ruled that Google won't be forced to sell its ad exchange, AdX, even though the same case found that Google's conduct in the ad tech market violated antitrust law. It's the latest example of a major tech platform avoiding a forced breakup after losing an antitrust case.

For publishers, that means the infrastructure powering much of the open web isn't changing overnight. But that doesn't mean nothing changes.

A forced sale would have been the dramatic option, but real, enforceable limits on how Google operates could end up mattering more.

Publishers benefit when more demand sources can compete fairly for their inventory, when technology gives them more choice and control, and when owning multiple pieces of the ad tech stack doesn't determine who wins.

The ruling didn’t change the finding that Google violated antitrust law. It simply determined that a breakup isn’t the remedy. The broader conversation around how Google operates and what that means for competition is still unfolding.

Whatever comes next, Mediavine’s focus remains the same: building technology that creates more competition, more choice and more control over how their inventory is monetized.

The videos you’re already creating could be earning more for you.

Tania Lau of Cooking For My Soul used video she was already making for social and put Universal Player Plus to work on her site.

This meant video CPMs increased by more than 20%, overall ad revenue was up 29% year over year, and Q2 was her second-best RPM quarter on record.

She didn't have to add more ad placements or create more content. She found another way to get more value from what she was already making.

September is the hinge between summer and the biggest quarter of the year.

Readers are settling into fall routines, planning cozy meals, and starting to browse for the holidays. Advertisers are ramping up around back-to-school, NFL kickoff, and early holiday planning. That makes September a valuable window to get ahead of demand before it peaks.

It’s also the last full month before Q4. Traffic is still steady, pressure is lower, and the changes you make now have time to settle before the highest-earning quarter in digital advertising begins.

Update a seasonal post. Turn on a feature you've been putting off. Clean up an underperforming page. The work you do in September can show up in your Q4 revenue.

Swipe for your full September playbook, including seasonal content opportunities with high traffic potential, resources exclusive to Mediavine publishers, and a quick optimization to implement this month.

Every month, Mediavine publishers get direct access to Eric Hochberger, our Co-Founder and CEO, and Amanda Martin, our CRO, for a publisher-focused live session and open Q&A.

That kind of access is easy to lose over time, but we've built it into how we operate.

Here's what's on the agenda for Wednesday Sept. 2 at 1pm:

👉 An industry and market update on what's changing in search, AI, and monetization

👉 Your monthly Mediavine revenue update, including what we're seeing across the network

👉 New dashboard enhancements built for better visibility into your performance

👉 A first look at upcoming releases at Mediavine

This is exclusive to Mediavine publishers. Save your seat at the registration link in your email. We will see you on Wednesday!

Mediavine’s CRO Amanda Martin sat down with the podcast to talk about what's changing in how people find content online, and what it means for your revenue.

More and more searches on Google now show an answer right on the search results page, so people never click through to a website at all. That's called "zero-click search," and it's up roughly 20%.

The effect isn't the same for every site. Some publishers have lost as much as 70% of their traffic while others are still growing. The real difference is the quality of the people actually reading it. A bot scrolling past your page doesn't earn you anything, where a real, engaged reader does.

The encouraging part is that even with all of this change, Mediavine ad inventory is selling for higher rates than it has in the past two years. Good content and real, engaged readers still hold real value to advertisers, that hasn't changed.

Amanda's advice is to not hold onto how things used to work so tightly that you're afraid to try something new. Search is changing, and so is how advertisers buy ads. Waiting for the old way to come back could cost you more than trying something different.

Just like a house, your website has a lot going on beneath the surface.

Your host builds the foundation. You fill the rooms with the content, photos, and stories your readers come for. In between is WordPress: the themes, plugins, updates, and integrations keeping it all running.

Over time, those additions can stop working together as smoothly as they once did, especially when traffic ramps up.

Join Mediavine and Andrew Wilder of NerdPress on Wednesday, August 26 from 2:00–3:00 p.m. ET for This Old (WordPress) House, an exclusive, practical live session on what tends to go wrong behind the scenes of a WordPress site and what's worth checking before your busiest traffic months hit.

Andrew will cover:
✅ What tends to go wrong "behind the walls" of a WordPress site
✅ How plugins, themes, updates, and integrations affect one another
✅ Common signs your setup needs attention
✅ What to review before peak traffic arrives
✅ Clear steps to keep your site running smoothly when it counts

Whether your site is a charming fixer-upper or a carefully renovated dream home, you'll leave with a clearer picture of what deserves a closer look. Mediavine publishers, save your seat with the registration link in your email.

Meet Max Karr, Mediavine’s Director of Buyer Development 👋

You might not talk to Max directly, but the work he does happens before every campaign that runs on your site.

Max builds relationships with the agencies and brands buying ad space across Mediavine's network, and his whole job is making sure those buyers actually want to spend on premium, well-curated inventory, like yours.

A lot of that work happens behind the scenes, including educating buyers, solving problems before they become your problem, and constantly making the case for why quality publishers deserve real demand. Every one of those conversations is what turns into more revenue opportunity on your end.

His read on where things are headed is that AI and agentic buying are taking on more of the buying process. This means well-curated, high-quality inventory, like Mediavine’s, only becomes more valuable.

Outside of work, Max recently got back from his honeymoon in Italy with his wife Marlie, easily the biggest thing on his calendar for months. Travel is how he recharges. He loves the food, w**e, history, and always coming home having learned something. Between trips, he's spending time with his support system, Marlie, his family, and his best pals.

We hit the jackpot having Max here, and so did every publisher benefiting from the demand he brings in. He's part of how we deliver on our mission to build the future of monetization for digital businesses, one publisher at a time.

20,000 publishers in one network.

Mediavine just hit a milestone. At this scale, every publisher in the network benefits from being part of it. More data means stronger advertiser demand and better performance across the board.

The network gets stronger as it grows and so does every site inside it.

Google Search page views fell 34% for publishers last year. Google Discover fell 15%. The publishing landscape is shifting faster than most platforms are built to respond to.

Mediavine's answer is to bring publisher experience to the table by giving a deeply respected publisher with years of experience in the trenches a seat in the strategy room.

Cyd Converse is our new Director of Publisher Advocacy & Partnerships. She's run her own publishing business,The Sweetest Occasion, for nearly 20 years. She knows what's at stake when a platform changes the rules. And now she's the person making sure publisher reality is in the room when Mediavine makes decisions.

The role couldn't be in better hands.

The system behind your ads just got an upgrade.

Every time a visitor loads a page on your site, a real-time ad auction happens behind the scenes. In just milliseconds, advertisers compete for the opportunity to serve an ad, with the highest-value bid winning the impression.

Mediavine rebuilt the technology powering that auction process from the inside out, making it faster, more efficient and better equipped to capture advertiser demand.

More advertisers bidding means better matches for your inventory. Better matches mean stronger revenue for you.

And you don't need to take any action, as it's already running on your site.

This is the work we're doing behind the scenes so you can focus on your business. We'll keep building the tech behind your revenue.
