There is one ten-second window where every customer gives your business their full attention, and most shops spend it with the screen turned the wrong way.

The Federal Reserve's 2026 Diary of Consumer Payment Choice counts 47 payments a month for the average consumer: 16 on credit, 15 on debit, just six in cash. Nobody counts out bills anymore, so the total on the screen is the only moment they really register what they are spending. If that screen faces your employee, the customer's moment is a mystery until the receipt prints.

A customer facing display fixes that, and it does three more things in the same ten seconds:

A private tip prompt (Toast platform data puts the average card tip at 19.3 percent in full-service and 15.8 percent at quick-service counters in Q1 2026)
A one-tap digital receipt that builds your customer list
Loyalty sign-up with a phone number instead of a paper form

Where does your counter's second screen point right now?

The team got together before the long weekend to recognize our Top Dawgz.

The award goes to our reps, but there is a real business behind every number on the board. Getting our merchant on board is the start. Taking care of them afterwards is what really counts.

A good way to head into Labor Day Weekend. Well earned. 👏

The person running your tip pool is often the one person who legally cannot be in it.

Under federal law, managers and supervisors are barred from taking a share of a mandatory tip pool, full stop. The Department of Labor restated it in January 2025. Yet in a lot of small restaurants, the shift lead doing the midnight split on a clipboard is also the one taking a cut.

The fix is not a bigger clipboard. It is moving the math into the POS, where every card tip, cash tip, and hour already lives.

Inside the post: who can be in the pool when you take a tip credit, the four split formulas that hold up, and how the new $25,000 no-tax-on-tips deduction covers pooled tips too.

What if the most useful report in your shop is one you have never opened?

Every receipt you print already contains the ingredients: items, quantities, price, time of day, who rang it up. Most owners only ever read the sales total at the bottom and toss the rest.

The Census Bureau reported U.S. retail sales fell 0.6 percent in July 2026. Owners who track a few simple retail metrics knew whether their shop dipped with the market or because something specific changed. Everyone else just felt it.

Seven numbers worth watching, where your register already keeps them, and a fifteen-minute weekly habit that turns them into decisions.

Which number do you actually check every week?

Most shop owners assume return fraud is a big-box problem. It is not. It is a small-shop problem, because small shops are the ones that rarely look up the original sale.

The National Retail Federation and Happy Returns found that 9% of all retail returns are fraudulent, out of nearly $850 billion returned in 2025. Roughly one refund in eleven.

The fix is not a suspicious clerk. It is three habits:
Look up the original sale before you refund.
Refund to the card, cash or gift card that paid, every time.
Inspect the item for fifteen seconds. Nobody minds.

When was the last time you pulled a refund report by employee or by item?

Return fraud now claims 9% of all retail returns. See how small shops catch fake receipts, wardrobing and empty-box returns, and how VMS helps you stop it.

Here is a mistake that quietly costs gift shops thousands every December: pricing your card processing around a $50 basket when your real average sale is $9.

At 2.9% plus 30 cents, that $9 sale does not cost you 2.9%. It costs you 6.2%. Multiply that across a season of small tickets and the gap between a fair processing agreement and a lazy one is routinely several thousand dollars a year.

The other leak is the line itself.

Four shoppers an hour abandoning a $16 add-on across 200 peak-season hours is $12,800 gone. That is more than the cost of replacing your hardware.

And the fix is almost never something you can do in December, which is exactly why now is the time to look at it.

What is your average ticket during the holidays? That single number decides which processing model actually works for your shop.

Two out of every three payments your customers make are on a card. The Federal Reserve's 2026 Diary of Consumer Payment Choice puts credit and debit together at two-thirds of all consumer payments.

Here is what that means for you. Every one of those sales leaves a record behind with a name attached to it. Most small businesses never open it, then go shopping for customer database software to do the exact same job.

What your register is probably already tracking:

Who came back, and how often
What they actually bought, not what you assume they bought
How to reach them, the moment you start asking at the receipt prompt

The list is already there. Nobody showed you where the button was.

When was the last time you looked at the customer screen on your POS?

https://www.getvms.com/customer-database-software/

Most customer database software duplicates what your register already collects. Build a real customer database at checkout instead. Get a free VMS quote today.
