PS STYLED Art After Dark - Featured Article by the
Dubuque Museum of Art
As Iowa’s oldest cultural institution, The Dubuque Museum of Art (DuMA) was honored to participate in this issue of PS STYLED, Art After Dark. DuMA’s mission is to excite, engage and serve diverse communities within the Tri-State area through our collections, exhibitions and educational programs. We connect generations of people to their cultural heritage and exceptional art. This issue of PS STYLED has uniquely combined the art of fashion with the natural beauty of the museum, along with works from three of our current exhibitions, FLOW: Journey through the Mississippi Watershed, The Merry Makers: Paintings by Carrie Pearce, and pieces from our permanent collection. The FLOW exhibition focuses on the themes of water, specifically the Mississippi River, and our personal connection to it. In her beautiful flowing evening gown, Carolyn highlights the Watershed Cairns, by Libby Reuter and Joshua Rowan. These fragile glass cairns are created to mark little known waterscapes where one can see the watershed at work or where the natural streams have been harmed or buried. The objective of this exhibition is to celebrate the Mississippi’s River basin’s water wealth. In the background, Jennifer Lynn Bates presents Clean Water, which is a site-specific installation representing the Dubuque Region of the Mississippi, from North of Lock and Dam #11 to south of Catfish Creek. In Hidden Magic, Susan Knight takes inspiration from the role rain gardens play in the hydrology of water. The extensive deep root systems of the native and adapted plants thrive in rain gardens as a naturally effective way to manage rainwater runoff. The metallic train on the model’s gown beautifully enhances the concept of the rainwater runoff. Pearce’s collection of her fantastic figures in a style that has been described as imaginary realism. Although dedicated to the rigorous 16th century painting techniques of the Old Masters, she paints curious scenes of children interwoven with their toys and pets. The model wonderfully compliments this collection with a vintage, but youthful style gown, from the PS Styling closet. The DuMA invites you to visit our beautiful and charming museum. Curiosity is all you need to walk through our front doors. No education is necessary. Whether it’s an interest in an exhibition, photography, or you’re looking for a field trip with your children, we have a little something for everyone.
