Děkuju vĆ”m (THANK YOU) to everyone who supported, volunteered and participated at the first-ever ā€œBohemian Alps Marketā€ event that took place this past Sunday! ā™„ļø

The local makers and small businesses set up such awesome displays and I can't thank you enough for sharing your beautiful art, products and families'/employees' time at our community's Dwight Czech Festival--it was an honor to have you all there!

The definition of "bohemian" is "a socially unconventional lifestyle, especially one that is involved in the arts". Thank you so much to the instructors from The Lux Center of the Arts that led the stamped foil art activity and encouraged our youth to embrace their creativity. I would HIGHLY encourage you to visit their Lincoln location where we've LOVED having our own kids' birthday parties at their studio where you can choose from a variety of activities: self portraits, ceramics, etc.

A special thank you to our official event sponsors:

ā€œLook for the helpers. You will always find people that are helping.ā€ -Fred Rogers

That’s what I love about a small town, rural community. The people who are stepping in behind the scenes.

These ā€œhelpersā€ are the turbine of the ship; the driving force that propels it through the waves to the next destination.

They have the motivation and stamina to make sure the job gets done and others are cared for. Sometimes they show up as a team; other times they are there solo. They come in many forms and wear many hats.

šŸ’›Owning a bakery and making extra treats for school functions.
šŸ’›Lending a vehicle and helping move all the car seats for a mom with a flat tire.
šŸ’›Praying for others inside the church, then landscaping the grotto before making dinner for their family.
šŸ’›Driving home from work, jumping on a mower and heading to the cemetery each week.
šŸ’›Leaving a cornfield or ballgame to jump in a vehicle and race to a volunteer fire call.
šŸ’›Taking the grandkids to the zoo so their parents can go on a lunch date.
šŸ’›Serving up thousands of pork and dumplings, then taking a to-go box at the end of the day.
šŸ’›Caring for someone’s loved one that can’t leave the house so they can run errands.
šŸ’›Providing car pools to games and working concessions.
šŸ’›Setting up an outdoor big screen with treats and inviting the whole town.
šŸ’›Embroidering designs on small vests and knitting baptismal blankets.
šŸ’›Generating beautiful variations of irises and sharing them with aspiring gardeners.
šŸ’›Sending encouraging notes to past students and taking the time for teaching moments.
šŸ’›Setting up meal trains when a family experiences any sort of grief or hardship.
šŸ’›Painting unicorns and dinosaurs on countless cheeks, making kids feel special.

WHY LOCAL?

"Buying local isn’t just a trend statement. Boutiques are one of the top businesses that thrive due to outside visitors in small towns. It creates rural jobs and opportunities for business owners, their staff they employ, it contributes to overall improved small-town infrastructure and creates foot traffic for other businesses in the area. The Boutique Hop is a fun way to venture out to rural areas and experience all that these small towns have to offer."

BOHEMIAN PLUM DUMPLINGS
Recipe by: Amy Policky

-1 cup of instant potatoes
-1 cup of cold water
-1 teaspoon of salt

-1 egg

-1 cup of flour

-10 to 12 plums (depending on size)

Wash the plums, slice them open, remove pit, fill cavity with a spoonful of sugar and set aside. *The next part is an important series of events—aka: don’t cook like I normally do and just throw all the ingredients in a bowl!

First, mix the instant potatoes, cold water and salt. Once that sets up, mix in the egg. Then add the cup of flour. Use your hands to roll out the dough into a long, snake-like rope. Slice/section the dough into 10-12 pieces. Flatten each piece into a circle, place the plum in the middle and seal by pinching it closed; then, gently roll them into a ball. Drop into boiling water for about 8 mins or until they float and remove with a large strainer spoon.

Serve while warm with a side of melted butter to pour over the top, then sprinkle with cinnamon & sugar and/or ground poppy seeds (I’ll attach a picture of what the grinder for the seeds looks like.)

Enjoy!

PS: If you are making these for a large family gathering or event, you can keep them in a large crock pot on the warm setting with some melted butter in the bottom. And, if you have leftovers, they can be frozen or kept in the fridge for a few days and rewarmed in the microwave.

"EMBRACE YOUR CHAOS"⠀
⠀
The first definition of "chaos" in the dictionary is, "complete disorder and confusion".⠀
⠀
HOWEVER, when speaking in terms of physics, "chaos" is defined as "the formless matter supposed to have existed before the creation of the universe".⠀
⠀
Based on your current perspective, how are YOU "embracing your chaos"? ⠀
⠀
We wear many hats when it comes to our roles and responsibilities. As a business, this season may feel out of order -- or perhaps full of potential, as the lines between professional and personal have been blurred (or blown to smithereens). You may be switching off between taking zoom calls and working with your kids on sight words.⠀
⠀
What most businesses don't realize is that this presents an amazing OPPORTUNITY to connect with your clients on a deeper level. It also builds upon your unique brand identity. ⠀
⠀
A beautiful logo, font set, color schemes and imagery are begging for a story, content and impact gained through your ACTIONS. Experiencing a hardship allows us to connect and relate on a deeper level with our clients because in at least one area, we're all experiencing a new normal. ⠀
⠀
So, what's your plan?! Whether you're a one-woman show, a tech firm, a school, a health facility, a non-profit, or a Fortune 500 company, how will you take your brand's values and put them to WORK. ⠀
⠀
Times and conveniences are different than normal for your audiences, so your marketing strategies should reflect that. What do your clients need? What do your employees need? By asking these questions, you will stand out from your competition and any businesses out there who are asking what THEY need. ⠀
⠀
If you related with this post (or at least found it interesting), give it a "like" or "share". And, if you are a business owner or part of a company/organization, I would LOVE to learn more about your story and talk creative strategy over coffee and cheers to

How is a brand made, you ask?!

Well…
when two fonts really love each other,
and you find a designer who speaks your love language,
and you create a mood board that spells out your hopes and dreams,
and all the colors create the perfect vibe,
and the copy sparks interest,
and you get a glimpse of the amazing imagery and illustrations,
and you gaze in the same direction of strategic themes,
and the actions of the brand play out to benefit those interested…

I’m thinking this should be a one-on-one conversation over coffee or drinks. If you or your business are interested in making some brand magic happen and want to learn how, contact: [email protected] or sign up for future emails in order to stay up to date on the new site launch at http://www.bohemianalpsco.com. I’m Hannah VanDerslice, the Founder & Creative Director of Bohemian Alps Collective. I’m a right-brained, working mama X3 of our little explorers, Eva, Azalea and Maximus, alongside my left-brained hubby, Jeremy. My background is in creative + strategic branding, advertising & social media. I’ve always been passionate about hearing and telling stories whether it be with a camera or pen and paper. ⠀
⠀
My traditional education is comprised of working in the marketing and branding division at a Fortune 100 company, a local non-profit, teaching a copywriting course as an adjunct professor at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, starting a professional photography and design business back in 2010 and finishing my Master’s thesis that studied how female entrepreneurs use social media for their businesses. ⠀
⠀
I’ve had the opportunity to travel to 15 different countries, where I love testing the cultural cuisines (except fish that come with teeth or eyeballs…and black fungi soup, turns out:P). We’ve met some amazing people, done things I would NEVER do now that we have kids (lol), seen amazingly beautiful parts of our planet and branched out of my comfort zone. Travel builds stronger relationships, creates a better understanding of other cultures, helps you better understand yourself and inspires new ways of thinking. The greatest impact is that it makes you truly appreciate your roots.⠀
⠀
Speaking of roots, we chose to build our home in the heartland of Nebraska, in this region called the Bohemian Alps, among the vast landscapes of rolling hills because it’s between the small towns where we both grew up. It’s God’s canvass – my favorite days are when an overcast sky hits the lime green and ombre textures of native grass at golden hour. There is so much beauty in the small-town life, friends and family, and potential to use our talents to add to a growing rural community we love and now get to call our home. Everything from the traditional recipes, festivals, slow-paced living, agriculture and recreation… it’s a place like no other, and I’d love to invite you along our journey: www.bohemianalpsco.com⠀

Was utterly delighted to come across a Lincoln Journal Star editorial this morning, written by Cindy Lange-Kubic with not one, but TWO recent poems by Ted Kooser. He never fails to create the perfect visual metaphors for the feelings that seem too overwhelming to attempt to articulate. Here is the rare treasure he chose to share amidst uncertain times. Thankful for our formal U.S. poet laureate and local artist that we are lucky enough to bump into at our local cafe every so often. Make sure to read the entire LJS story for his other poem, ā€œQueueā€.

Because of so many great leaders, role models, teachers and fellow artists who I've worked with and have been mentored by in my life, I’m able to do what I love. Those relationships leave me thankful and inspired to produce the kind of work that leaves an intentional impact and message. Collaborating with other artists is something that can fuel a project forward when ideas have the space to collide and the flexibility to try new approaches.

This is a shot with Alan Jackson. When it comes to product photos, I can describe and bounce off the direction of visual inspiration and then he just outputs amazing imagery. He is a master at perfecting lighting, post production and it's a bonus that he's got a great sense of humor. Whether photographing a sports car or scientific instrument, he's meticulous with camera, angles, lighting, and I admire his attention to detail that shows in the result.
