If you are a business considering what to use for a logo, consider this, when you get down to the final version, ALWAYS ask your designer for ALL file types. They may only give you the final pdf if you don't ask. The VECTOR is most important because it is used to scale your logo to various sizes without losing its proportions. So if one day you decide to sponsor your local Little League and you need your logo to be 3 feet tall or 6 feet wide you are going to need a high resolution file! At that point you start wondering, is your designer still around?
Talk to your designer up front about the possible places your logo might be used - letterhead, business card, email signature, website, promotional products. Think about how it shows up on different backgrounds, different media types and the sizes and proportions for each of those.
