Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) confirmed in a wild bird in South Carolina. This is the first case of Eurasian H5 HPAI in the U.S. since 2016.
CDC considers the risk to the general public from HPAI H5 infections to be low. No human infections with Eurasian H5 viruses have occurred in the U.S. Proper handling and cooking of poultry/eggs to an internal temperature of 165˚F kills bacteria and viruses, including HPAI.
