At the national We the People competition last week in Washington, D.C., Easthampton High School students once again rose to the occasion—demonstrating deep constitutional understanding, teamwork, and an unwavering commitment to civic engagement. While the team did not place in the top 10 overall, Unit Two earned national recognition as the best in their category—an incredible achievement that speaks volumes.
But behind the accolades is something even more powerful.
Since being introduced in 2011 by educator Kelley Brown, We the People has become one of the school’s most celebrated academic programs—earning nine consecutive Massachusetts State Championships and shaping generations of thoughtful, engaged citizens.
Inside the classroom, students aren’t just learning history—they’re practicing democracy. Through rigorous preparation, collaborative teamwork, and yes, even failure, they develop the confidence to think critically, speak with purpose, and lead with integrity.
These students are balancing academics, athletics, jobs, and leadership roles—all while stepping far outside their comfort zones to grow.
And their message to the community is simple, yet powerful: You don’t have to be in a position of authority to make a difference.
Easthampton, these are your future leaders—and they’re just getting started.
