POST-TRAUMATIC SPEECH SYNDROME (PTSS)

Most of us are familiar with PTSD—Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, a serious mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing trauma.

But if you are of a certain age, you may recognize my very unofficial version:

PTSS: Post-Traumatic Speech Syndrome.

As a coach, I often hear people go straight to “I have a fear of public speaking.” Sometimes that is true. However, other times I wonder if it is not a genuine fear and perhaps based on a traumatic speaking experience?

Maybe you were simply never properly trained—and somewhere along the way, you had one awful speaking experience that your brain has been replaying ever since.

Mine happened in grade school. Remember being called to the front of the class to give a book report?

No coaching, confidence-building, or instruction on what to do with your hands.

The experience went something like this:

The teacher said, “Kelly, come on up and speak.”

Then I lost my place, and my voice cracked.

The class started laughing at me and calling me names.

The experience ended with me in tears and a red face.

My brain quietly filed the whole thing under…NEVER DO THAT AGAIN.

Has this or something like it happened to you?

Years later, you are in a meeting, preparing for a presentation, speaking on camera, or introducing yourself at a networking event—and suddenly that nervous seventh grader is back in charge.

For many people, especially those who entered the workforce before receiving formal presentation training, public speaking was something we were simply expected to know how to do.

The problem is that speaking confidently is not something you are born knowing.

It is a skill. And the great news is skills are learned.

Solution…try replacing an old experience with new training, new tools, and better evidence.

Because one bad book report should not be ruining your adult career.

Skills will get you noticed. Presence will make you unforgettable!

ARE YOU STILL INTRODUCING THE OLD VERSION OF YOU?

Sometimes the biggest presence gap is not who you are today.

It is the past version of yourself you keep introducing.

You have grown and updated your personal style.
Your experience has expanded.
Your confidence has changed.
Your goals may look completely different.

But when someone asks, “What do you do?” you may still reach for the same outdated title, old story, or safe description you have used for years.

That creates a disconnect between who you have become and how people experience you.

Personal presence requires updating the story.

Not exaggerating or reinventing yourself overnight.
Simply making sure your words reflect the person standing in the room today.

Take a look at your introduction, bio, LinkedIn profile, and even the way you talk about your work.

Do they represent where you are going—or where you used to be?

Your presence should not be introducing yesterday’s version of you.

Skills will get you noticed. Presence will make you unforgettable!

PERSONAL PRESENCE: ARE YOU A TOUGH NUT TO CRACK?

Strong presence does not mean making people work hard to get to know you.

Sometimes, in an effort to look confident, professional, or self-protective, we accidentally become a barrier. We cross our arms. Keep conversations short. Avoid eye contact. Give one-word answers. Stay so guarded that people cannot tell whether we are confident—or simply closed off.

That matters.

Personal presence is not only about how you look when you enter a room. It is also about how easy you make it for others to connect with you.

You do not have to overshare, perform, or become the loudest person in the room.

But you do need to leave the door open for people to approach you.

Smile. Ask a question. Show interest. Let some warmth through.

Be memorable because people remember how you made them feel not necessarily what you said

Skills will get you noticed. Presence will make you unforgettable!

BITTERNESS IS ALWAYS LURKING... CHOOSE JOY

When life gets hard, bitterness can sneak in quietly.

You can become bitter about the job.
The relationship.
The disappointment.
The setback.
The season that feels like it should have ended already.

The danger is letting a temporary circumstance create a permanent attitude.

Choosing joy does not mean pretending everything is fine. It does not mean ignoring hurt, avoiding hard conversations, or staying in situations that need to change.

It means refusing to let frustration take over your perspective.

Handle what needs handling. Set the boundary. Make the decision. Ask for help. Change direction when necessary.

Then remind yourself that seasons and circumstances change.

People grow.

New opportunities appear.

And sometimes the thing that feels unbearable today becomes the very experience that redirects you tomorrow.

Bitterness can quietly steal your energy.

Joy requires intention.

Choose joy.

Skills will get you noticed. Presence will make you unforgettable!

LABOR DAY QUESTION: WHAT ARE YOU WORKING SO HARD TO PROVE?

There is a difference between working hard because you are building something meaningful—and working hard because you are stuck on the Proof Wheel.

The proof wheel sounds like:

I need one more accomplishment.
One more title.
One more yes.
One more opportunity to show them I belong.

So you work harder, take on more, overdeliver, and keep moving the finish line.

That kind of labor is exhausting because there is no real destination.

So how do you get off the ‘wheel’?

Start by recognizing what you have already earned.

Stop saying yes simply to prove you can handle it.

Choose opportunities that actually move you forward.

Set boundaries around your time and energy.

Communicate your value without apologizing for it.

Let your experience speak before you scramble to prove yourself again.

A powerful presence is not about constantly demonstrating that you belong.

It is walking into the room already knowing you do.

If you are stuck on the Proof Wheel, give yourself permission to get off for a while.

Pause. Rest. Reflect on how far you have already come and everything you have accomplished.

You do not have to prove anything today.

Enjoy your family and friends. You have earned it.

Skills will get you noticed. Presence will make you unforgettable!

WHO IS HITCHED TO YOUR WAGON?

We talk a lot about how we show up—but presence is also shaped by who we choose to stand beside.

Before you hitch your wagon to someone, check the wheels.

Do they…

Follow through?

Treat people well when nobody important is watching?

Do their actions match their words?

Create momentum—or manufacture drama?

Because every time you recommend, partner with, defend, or repeatedly align yourself with someone, you are lending them a little piece of your credibility.

That does not mean everyone in your circle has to be perfect. None of us are.

There is a big difference between a mutually respectful partnership and allowing someone’s repeated behavior to become tied to your reputation, opportunities, and future.

Choose carefully who gets hitched to your wagon.

Some people add momentum. Others drag down your reputation.

Skills will get you noticed. Presence will make you unforgettable!

BEWARE OF THE VANITY-PLATE LEADER
Leadership Presence

Some leaders love the title.

They love the meetings, the introductions, the recognition—and especially the victory lap.

What they do not seem to love is the work.

They tell the team, “We are all in this together,” then slowly push the planning, follow-up, problem-solving, and ex*****on onto everyone else.

Suddenly it becomes “our accomplishment.”

Leadership presence is not about looking important. It is about being useful.

Strong leaders delegate, but they also contribute by:

Removing roadblocks.

Making decisions.

Protecting the team from overload.

And when the spotlight comes, they make sure the people who did the work are seen.

If you lead people, ask yourself:

Am I sharing the load—or just sharing the credit?

If you work for this type of leader, set boundaries.

Make sure everyone is working towards the same goal with equal effort.

Skills will get you noticed. Presence will make you unforgettable!

IS THE VERY THING YOU LOVE HOLDING YOU BACK?

Sometimes the things holding us back are not the things we dislike.

They are the things we love.

The organization you adore. Volunteer role that makes you feel needed. The project you cannot stop tweaking. People you never want to disappoint.

There is nothing wrong with loving any of them.

But when something consistently consumes your time, energy, and attention without moving your life forward, it may be time to ask a harder question:

What is this costing me?

Overcommitting can look a lot like ambition. Being busy can feel a lot like progress. And giving can feel wonderful—until you realize you have given everyone else the time you needed to build your own future.

Not everything you love deserves unlimited access to you.

Protect time for the work, relationships, and opportunities that give something back, create momentum, and move you toward who you are becoming.

Presence is not just how you show up…it is knowing where you should show up.

Skills will get you noticed. Presence will make you unforgettable!

PROJECT PRESENCE: ARE YOU MOVING THE NEEDLE—OR A NEEDLE IN A TASK LIST?

Being busy can feel remarkably similar to making progress.

Answer the email. Attend the meeting. Fix the slide. Volunteer for one more thing. Add another task. Check another box.

Suddenly, your day is full—but did anything actually move?

Project presence is not about how much activity you can generate. It is about being intentional enough to recognize which actions create meaningful momentum.

Before automatically saying yes to the next task, ask:

Will this move the needle on something that actually matters? More sales, happy customers, productive employees and volunteers.

Look at your current commitments. Which ones build your reputation, strengthen an important relationship, create revenue, develop your leadership, or move you closer to a meaningful goal?

Then look at everything else.

A packed task list may make you feel productive while quietly stealing time from your biggest priorities.

Do fewer things with greater intention.

Presence is not proving you are busy. It is making your effort count.

Skills will get you noticed. Presence will make you unforgettable!

HEY, YOU DIPPED YOUR CHOCOLATE IN MY PEANUT BUTTER!

Remember that old line, “You put your chocolate in my peanut butter!”

Funny in a candy commercial. Not always so funny in real life.

It is a great metaphor for unwanted intrusions or disruptions in personal space.

In presence, that can look like interrupting, oversharing, hijacking a conversation, giving advice nobody asked for, or inserting yourself into every discussion.

A strong presence is not about dipping into everyone else’s peanut butter.

It is about knowing when you have been invited to dip.

Read the room. Watch body language. Ask before offering advice. Let people finish their stories without immediately taking over the conversation.

Confidence without awareness can feel intrusive.

Great presence has boundaries.

Chocolate and peanut butter can be fabulous together.

But sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is recognize:

Should I ask for permission or receive an invitation to dip?

Skills will get you noticed. Presence will make you unforgettable!
