LEADERSHIP PRESENCE: Don't Be a Dread Dumper

When challenges pile up, it is tempting to march into the room carrying a giant emotional trash bag and dump every worry onto the nearest available human.

I have done it too.

Overwhelm can make every problem feel urgent, enormous, and personally assigned to ruin your day.

But leadership presence is not pretending everything is perfect.
It is learning how to pause, sort the pile, and lead the next move.

Start here:
1. Take a breath before you broadcast the panic.
2. Separate the real problem from the dramatic storyline.
3. Identify the one task that will move the needle first.
4. Ask for support with clarity, not chaos.
5. Remember: there is a solution to every problem.

Your team does not need you to arrive with all the answers.
They need you to bring steadiness, perspective, and a next step.

This week, carry the solution forward—not the dread.

The Transformation is Real: Is Your First Slide Stealing Your Strongest Moment?

Presentation presence.

When we transformed Vikram’s presentation slides, one of the most powerful changes was also the simplest.

He used to begin with a traditional title slide.

Instead, one of the things we had him do is to open his presentation with a blank screen.

Why?

Because the first few seconds belong to the speaker—not the slide.

Vikram was not making a strong first impression because he used to open his talk with a title slide, drawing the audience’s attention to reading the slide while he was talking.

Before he had the chance to hook them, make eye contact, or build a connection.

Your slides should support your presence, not compete with it.

Five ways to strengthen your presentation presence:
1. Open with a hook, not a title slide.
2. Use fewer words and stronger visuals.
3. Keep fonts, colors, and layouts consistent.
4. Reveal information gradually instead of showing
everything at once.
5. End with one clear takeaway and call to action.

Do your slides elevate your presence—or quietly dilute it?

Your camera is on…are YOU?

Being a strong communicator starts with being a strong participant or audience member.

Especially online.

In a culture that is always on, scrolling, and multitasking, it is easy to forget our manners.

Your presence matters whether you are the speaker or not.
Your facial expression, eye contact, posture, and energy tell the speaker whether you are engaged—or checked out of the conversation.

Work and life get busy for all of us… but if you need to check your phone, answer an email, or step away?

Simply turn your camera off.

Otherwise:
Remember to look toward the camera when someone is speaking.

React naturally.

Sit like you are a part of the conversation.

Avoid typing unless you are taking notes.

Give the speaker the same attention you would want when it is your turn.

Listening is not passive.

It is one of the most powerful forms of communication presence.

The best speakers do not just know how to hold a room.
They know how to help someone else feel seen while they have the floor.

At your next meeting, do not just log in. Show up with presence.

Let’s PRODUCE Your Powerful Presence© together.

THE FOUR PILLARS OF PRESENCE©

Which Pillar Is Quietly Costing You Opportunities?

Presence is no longer reserved for executives.

It belongs to everyone.
And every project.

Through my work with public speaking clubs and private clients, I keep seeing the same gap in different combinations:

A great speaker with weak slides.
A talented business owner with a confusing website.
A strong leader whose online presence does not reflect their value.
A powerful idea that never quite lands.

Modern communicators need more than isolated skills.

We need all four pillars of presence to produce a cohesive experience for our audiences, interactions, and projects.

At Sugar Please Productions, we developed a framework, The Four Pillars of Presence© that all together express the totality of YOU.

Personal Presence — how you carry yourself.

Communication Presence — how your voice and message land.

Leadership Presence — how people experience your steadiness, trust, and influence.

Project Presence — how your website, slides, visuals, content, and offers bring your ideas to life.

People are experiencing you before you say a word.
What do you want that experience to communicate?

When the pillars work together, your value becomes easier to see, trust, and remember.

Which pillar of presence is quietly holding you back?

Let’s PRODUCE Your Powerful Presence©.

The transformation is real.

Katie was passed over for a promotion and told the phrase too many managers use as a cop-out:

“You’re just not management material.”

Ouch!

But the better question was not, “Is that true?”

The better question was:

Why was she being perceived that way?

Katie had skills.

She had ideas.

She had value.

But her presence was not fully visible.

The solution? We worked on the gap.

She became more intentional in meetings.

She built the confidence to contribute instead of disappearing.

We slightly upgraded her wardrobe so her image matched her ambition.

We updated LinkedIn from a résumé page into a thought leadership platform where she could share her ideas.

That is what presence does.

It does not turn you into someone else. It helps people finally experience the value that was already there.

Skills will get you noticed.

PRESENCE will make you unforgettable.

Ready to close the gap between how capable you are and how powerfully you are being perceived?

Let’s PRODUCE Your Powerful Presence© together.

Note: Katie’s identity has been protected. Her name has been changed, and the image used is AI-generated to preserve confidentiality while sharing the lesson behind the transformation.

IS YOUR BEHIND GETTING SORE FROM SITTING ON THE FENCE?

“Sitting on the fence” is another fun idiom which means one is stuck between choices.

You are not fully in.
You are not fully out.
You are hovering in the land of maybe, someday, not yet, and let me think about it one more time.

We all do it.

We sit on the fence because we are afraid of choosing wrong.
Afraid of being judged.
Afraid of being seen trying.
Afraid that if we finally decide, we will have to back it up with action.

But here is the presence problem:
Fence-sitting leaks energy.

People can feel when your words say yes, but your body says maybe.

When your message is polished, but your conviction is missing.

When you are waiting for permission to own the room.
Presence grows when you decide.

Not recklessly, loudly, perfectly…but intentionally.

Try this:
Name the decision you are avoiding.
Ask what you would choose if fear was not driving.
Pick the next honest move, not the forever answer.
Say it clearly.
Then act like your choice deserves your support because it does.

You do not need to know every step.

Your presence sharpens when your energy has a direction.

Are you ready to stop sitting on the fence?

COMPRESSED IS NOT THE SAME AS EMPTY

Sometimes after you have shown up, led the room, created content, facilitated a workshop, coached a client, recorded the video, or held your presence with intention all day long, you may feel a little tired or that your energy has been compressed.

Not sad.
Not broken.
Not out of magic.
Just compressed.

There is a difference.

Empty feels like there is nothing left. You over did it and your body, mind, and soul need to rest.

Compressed means your energy has been focused, squeezed, directed, and used on purpose.

Producing your presence intentionally takes energy.

When you are fully engaged, reading the room, choosing your words, managing your visuals, holding your posture, listening deeply, and making people feel seen, your system is working at high capacity.

That does not mean you are weak.
It means you were present.

The mistake is thinking you should immediately bounce into the next thing.

Sometimes presence needs recovery.

Try this:
Don’t jump into the next meeting or task right away.
Drink water and close your eyes for a moment.
Focus on deep breathing.
Write down what worked before you critique what did not.
Do one thing that gives energy back instead of pulling more from you like taking a short walk.

You may not be empty; you may need to recharge.

Take the space you need before the next thing so you don’t drive yourself to empty.

If you do hit ‘empty.’ Be kind to yourself. Life gets hectic and deadlines are real.

Try the 4R’s…
Refuel. Reset. Reclaim. Rest.

Then come back with more intention, more clarity, and more of you.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:
It is your responsibility to get lit, be seen, and be heard.

After years of online meetings, I am still seeing too many people treat their virtual presence like an afterthought.

And here is the problem:

Online, people have fewer clues to experience your brilliance.

If your lighting is bad, your face disappears.

If you are shouting into your computer mic, your message feels harder to receive.

If your background looks like a laundry hostage situation, that becomes part of your first impression.

We get comfortable with the people who already know us.

But ask yourself:
How am I being experienced by someone meeting me
for the first time?

You do not need a studio setup.

Start here:
Put a simple light in front of you.
Use a lavalier mic or external microphone so your voice is clear.
Clean up or blur your background.
Raise your camera to eye level.
Look into the lens when making a key point.
Sit like your message matters.

Online presence is still presence.

Before you say a word, people are already experiencing your energy, visuals, sound, and setup.

Please do not make people work to see you, hear you, or understand you.

Your message deserves better.

Ready to stop disappearing on screen?

Ready to strengthen how you show up on screen and in the room?

05/25/2026

Memorial Day is more than long weekends, backyard barbecues, and hot dogs on the grill.

It is easy to slip into the mindset that Memorial Day is simply a “holiday weekend.” But this day asks more of us.

It is a day to pause.

To remember the brave men and women who gave their lives so we could live ours with freedom, choice, and opportunity.

FREEDOM IS NOT FREE

And the sacrifice runs deeper than the service member alone. It is carried by families, friends, brothers and sisters in arms, communities, and generations who remember the empty chairs, the missed milestones, and the names that still bring tears.

Instead of saying “Happy Memorial Day,” consider saying:

“Today, we remember and honor those who gave everything.”
“May we never forget the sacrifice behind our freedom.”
“Honoring the fallen and holding their families in our hearts.”

Today’s post is personal.

To my father, our friends and family, and all who continue to carry the memory of those they have lost—thank you for honoring them, speaking their names, and keeping their stories alive.

Today, we remember all of them with heavy hearts.

THE FUTURE YOU IS NOT A DIFFERENT PERSON…
IT IS YOU, AMPLIFIED.

We often keep acting like the next version of ourselves is some stranger we have to become.

More confident, visible, powerful, and polished.

But what if that person was there the whole time?

Quietly waiting under the doubt.
Behind the overthinking.
Beneath the old stories.
Inside the version of you that learned to shrink, perform, or play it safe.

Your future self is not asking you to become perfect or emulate someone else.

it is saying:
I have always been here.
Let me out!

Start small.
Stand a little taller.
Speak unapologetically.
Wear what feels aligned.
Share the idea before it is perfect.
Walk into the room like your presence belongs there.

The work is not to become someone who you think is better than you…

Your job is to turn up the volume and let yourself be yourself.

That is presence.
Not pretending.
Not performing.
Not chasing a new identity.

Amplifying your unique gifts and talents that have been waiting to be fully realized.

Ready to let the world see the fully realized you?
