Edwards SparkED Innovation team went to AFWERK Innovation Industry Days in San Antonio, Texas. They went for training and to network with industry companies, big things are coming to Edwards AFB. We also wanted to thank the AFWERK and OUTPOST community for their invite.

On Wednesday, November 9th, XPOI, the 412th Test Wing’s Innovation Department hosted an orientation for 14 Group POCs that were selected to participate in a year long Innovation Career Broadening assignment. The POCs will coach innovators on available resources, assist with rapid project start-ups, and facilitate culture change initiatives for 412th Test Wing Airmen.

This group of Airmen (from across the force) briefed me on three projects they are working to make our Air Force better…and I’m here for it! Look forward to seeing these solutions gain some traction and hopefully roll out to the force.

XCITE TEAM 2015 - The XCITE Team was established in 2015 and consisted of 3 senior leaders and volunteers. The senior leaders provided guidance for the long term strategy, coordinated training, conferences, and educational opportunities for airmen, approved funding for innovative ideas, and tracked the status of those efforts to promote innovation at Edwards Air Force Base, CA.

AFWERX, The Difference, & Gaping Void - AFWERX was established in 2017 by the SECAF and reporting to the Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force, AFWERX is a catalyst for agile AF engagement across industry, academia and non-traditional contributors to create transformative opportunities and foster a culture of innovation. The Difference was a consultant hired through AFWERX responsible for Eddie’s Big Quest for Innovation on the IdeaScale Platform, a crowd-sourcing challenge to find innovative ideas at Edwards. Gaping Void is a consultant hired through AFWERX to create the culture wall, manifesto, and innovation playbook. Experts on culture and tying emotion to action, they were the creator of Eddie the Innovation Dragon.

Hustle Squad 2018 - The Hustle Squad, a subset of the XCITE Team, was established in 2018 to execute key pieces of the innovation culture change initiative with a focus on relationship building, workforce engagement, and efforts that encourage and enable innovation.

116 Day Innovation Blitz - In September of 2018, the Hustle Squad was established to execute Brigadier General "Dragon" Teichert's 116 Day Innovation Blitz. The same amount of time it took to draft the Constitution of the U.S. In order to gain support for innovators around the base, he challenged the community to see how much they could accomplish in 116 days. The 116 Day Blitz concluded with the launch of Eddie's Big Quest for Innovation and the revealing of the Manifesto and Culture Walls in January of 2019.

Eddie’s Big Quest for Innovation - Eddie's Big Quest for Innovation was as a crowd-sourcing challenge at Edwards in search of innovative ideas. Using IdeaScale, a web-based platform, the Difference coined it as Eddie's Big Quest for Innovation. The quest toured B.G. Teichert at 8 different locations. Soliciting 162 ideas from the base community and bringing innovation to the forefront, it made Eddie's Big Quest the most active Air Force Challenge on IdeaScale as of February of 2019.

SparkED 2019 - In the Summer of 2019, The Hustle Squad became SparkED to tie into Air Force-wide Innovation efforts through Air Force Spark Tanks. SparkED's mission is to continue culture change, launch idea challenges, and assist idea owners in finding resources. SparkED's promise is to never remove the idea owner from the process. The idea will live and/or die with its champion.
