Radio history - how one Texan changed Radio broadcasting, forever.

This Texan Gordon Barton McLendon (1921-1986) was born in Paris, Texas. He described himself as the "Old Scotsman". Others called him "The Maverick of Radio."

In 1947, McLendon and his father acquired KLIF in Dallas and programmed a Top 40 format in the early 1950s. One description of the station noted that it was inspired by Todd Storz's experiments. McLendon refined the concept by tightening playlists to only the biggest hits, integrating fast-talking jocks, catchy jingles, and constant listener engagement.

McLendon pioneered the modern all-news format on XETRA in Tijuana and later on WNUS and was an early originator of the "beautiful music" format on KABL.

He's credited with establishing the first mobile news units, the first traffic reports, and popularizing the use of station jingles. They were produced by Bill Meeks, who founded PAMS after working for McLendon. McLendon also was among the first broadcasters in the United States to editorialize.

[9/15] Thank You to the City of El Campo and City Development Corporation of El Campo for backing this legislation. This is a big win for radio stations like KULP. you can't spell America with out AM.

Broadcasters, the NAB, state associations, and millions of listeners nationwide notched a major milestone in the years-long fight to protect in-car radio access as the House of Representatives passed the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act on Tuesday evening.
