Updated polling place information is now posted below, including the corrected Beresford address. The earlier version we published listed Beresford's location incorrectly, and we want to ensure voters have the accurate details they need before heading out to vote. Please verify your polling site with official county election resources.

Absentee voting now open in Union County as ballots arrive

Absentee voting for South Dakota’s June 2 primary election will begin Monday, April 27, after Union County received its ballots, the county auditor’s office announced.
Union County Auditor Katie Winquist confirmed Monday that “ballots are in and voting is open,” following a brief delay earlier in the absentee voting period. State law sets the absentee window to open 46 days before an election, but counties cannot print ballots until after the March 31 candidate‑filing deadline, when eligibility is finalized. That timing often creates a short gap between the legal start of absentee voting and the point when ballots are ready for distribution.
Ballot preparation includes certification, layout, programming, proofing and printing, all of which must be completed before counties may issue ballots.
With ballots now delivered, Union County will begin in‑person absentee voting at the auditor’s office on April 27. Ballots will also be mailed immediately to voters who previously submitted absentee applications.
Voters are encouraged to verify their registration information and monitor official county communications for any additional updates. The deadline to request an absentee ballot remains 5 p.m. the day before the election, according to SDCL 12‑19‑2.
Absentee voting is available at the Union County Auditor’s Office, 209 East Main Street in Elk Point. For more information, residents may call 605‑356‑2101.
