🐶 The Best Human Food for Dogs: A Tasty and Healthy Treat! 🍽️

While it's important to remember that the primary diet for dogs should consist of specially formulated dog food, there are some human foods that can be shared with our canine friends as an occasional treat. Here are a few safe and healthy options to consider:

Lean Meat: Cooked chicken, turkey, and lean beef are excellent sources of protein for dogs. Remove all skin and bones, and make sure the meat is well-cooked. Avoid using any seasoning, especially those containing onions or garlic.

Fish: Fish such as salmon and tuna can be a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which promote a healthy coat and skin. Ensure the fish is cooked thoroughly and be cautious of any small bones that may pose a choking hazard.

Vegetables: Dogs can enjoy a variety of vegetables, including carrots, green beans, peas, and sweet potatoes. Steam or lightly cook them to enhance digestibility, and avoid adding any seasonings or oils.

Fruits: Many fruits are safe for dogs and provide beneficial nutrients. Some popular choices include apples (without seeds), bananas, blueberries, and watermelon (seedless). Remember to remove any seeds or pits, as they can be harmful.

Plain Rice or Pasta: Plain cooked rice or pasta can serve as a simple and easily digestible treat for dogs. It can be particularly helpful when a dog is experiencing digestive upset.

Peanut Butter: Peanut butter can be a tasty and engaging treat for dogs. Make sure it does not contain xylitol, an artificial sweetener that can be toxic to dogs. Give it in moderation due to its high-calorie content.

Remember, moderation is key when feeding your dog human food. Treats should only make up a small portion of their overall diet. Always introduce new foods gradually, watching for any signs of allergies or sensitivities. If you have any concerns about your dog's diet or specific health conditions, it's best to consult with a veterinarian before introducing new foods.

Bon appétit to your DOGGY! 🐾

Do Dogs Need Sunglasses? SILLY, RIGHT...You decide!
Understanding Eye Protection for Our Canine Companions

When we think of sunglasses, we often associate them with protecting our own eyes from harmful UV rays and glare. But what about our dogs? Do dogs need sunglasses too? Understanding the importance of eye protection in dogs can help us make informed decisions about whether or not our canine can benefit from sunglasses.

Sun Protection: Dogs can be susceptible to the harmful effects of the sun's UV rays. Certain dog breeds, particularly those with lighter-colored or sensitive eyes, may be more prone to sun-related eye issues. Prolonged exposure to the sun without protection can potentially lead to conditions such as cataracts, corneal damage, and even skin cancer around the eyes.

Eye Conditions: Some dogs may have preexisting eye conditions that make them more vulnerable to sun damage. For example, dogs with a condition called pannus (chronic superficial keratitis) have increased sensitivity to sunlight. In such cases, protective eyewear can help shield their eyes and reduce the risk of complications.

Outdoor Activities: If your dog spends a lot of time outdoors, especially during peak sun hours, they can benefit from wearing sunglasses. Activities like hiking, boating, or even walks on bright, sunny days can expose their eyes to excessive UV radiation and glare. Sunglasses designed for dogs can help minimize these risks.

Protection from Debris: Sunglasses can also serve as a barrier against debris, such as dust, sand, or pollen, which may irritate a dog's eyes during outdoor excursions. This can be particularly helpful for dogs with allergies or those who frequently engage in activities like running, biking, or participating in agility sports.

Introducing Sunglasses: This should be done gradually and with patience. Start by acclimating them to the sensation of wearing sunglasses indoors, offering treats and positive reinforcement. Gradually transition to short outdoor sessions, allowing your dog to adjust to the new experience. It's best to choose sunglasses specifically designed for dogs for proper fit-comfort.

Dogs with specific eye conditions, light-colored eyes, or those who spend significant time outdoors can benefit from the added eye protection.

Majestic and Gentle Giants: The Irish Wolfhound

The Irish Wolfhound, known as one of the largest dog breeds in the world, captures the hearts of many with its striking appearance and gentle nature. With a rich history and impressive stature, the Irish Wolfhound has become a beloved breed renowned for its loyalty, grace, and loving temperament. Let's explore the fascinating qualities of this magnificent canine companion.

Noble History: The Irish Wolfhound's history can be traced back centuries. Bred in Ireland, these dogs were highly valued for their hunting skills and their ability to take down wolves, hence their name. They were treasured by Irish nobility and often presented as gifts to other monarchs and leaders. Over time, their numbers dwindled, but dedicated breed enthusiasts revived the breed, focusing on preserving their unique characteristics.

Towering Stature: Standing at an impressive height, the Irish Wolfhound is a true giant among dogs. Males can reach heights of 32 to 34 inches (81 to 86 cm) at the shoulder, with females slightly smaller. Their large, muscular bodies are built for endurance rather than bulk, showcasing elegance and grace in their movements.

Gentle - Affectionate Nature: Despite their size, Irish Wolfhounds are known for their gentle and loving nature. They have a calm and patient demeanor, making them excellent family pets and companions. Their affectionate and sociable personalities make them great with children and other animals, often earning them the title of "gentle giants."

Adaptability - Low Energy: Despite their historical role as hunters, Irish Wolfhounds are surprisingly adaptable to different living environments. While they enjoy outdoor activities and the chance to stretch their long legs, they are generally low-energy dogs that are content with moderate exercise. They are well-suited to relaxed and comfortable indoor living as long as they receive regular exercise and mental stimulation.

Lifelong Companions: Irish Wolfhounds form deep bonds with their human families and thrive on companionship. They are known for their loyalty and devotion, often developing a strong connection with their owners. Their gentle nature makes them excellent therapy dogs, providing comfort and emotional support to those in need.

Considerations: They have a relatively short lifespan, averaging around 6 to 8 years, which is important to consider when bringing one into your home.

While their size may be imposing, their hearts are gentle and their loyalty unmatched. For those fortunate enough to share their lives with an Irish Wolfhound, a remarkable journey of love and companionship awaits.

Beware: Foods That Are Toxic to Dogs

As dog owners, it's crucial to be aware of the foods that can be harmful or even toxic to our four-legged companions. While some human foods are safe and can even be beneficial for dogs, others can pose serious health risks. Let's explore a list of foods that are toxic to dogs and should be kept out of their reach.

Chocolate: Chocolate contains theobromine, a compound that is toxic to dogs. Dark chocolate, cocoa powder, and baking chocolate are particularly dangerous. Ingesting chocolate can lead to symptoms like increased heart rate, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, and, in severe cases, seizures or even death. Keep all chocolate products away from your dog.

Grapes and Raisins: Grapes and raisins are toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure. Even small amounts can be harmful. Symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and increased thirst. If you suspect your dog has ingested grapes or raisins, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Onions and Garlic: Onions and garlic, in all forms (raw, cooked, or powdered), contain compounds that can damage a dog's red blood cells. Consuming these foods can lead to anemia, weakness, and gastrointestinal upset. Avoid feeding your dog dishes that contain onions or garlic, including onion powder or garlic powder.

Xylitol: Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in many sugar-free products, such as chewing gum, candy, and baked goods. It is highly toxic to dogs and can cause a sudden release of insulin, leading to low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Symptoms include weakness, vomiting, seizures, and liver failure. Keep all products containing xylitol away from your dog.

Avocado: Avocado contains a substance called persin, which can be toxic to dogs in large amounts. While the fruit itself is generally safe, the pit, skin, and leaves contain higher concentrations of persin and should be avoided. Ingesting avocado can cause stomach upset, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Alcohol: Alcohol is extremely dangerous for dogs. Even small amounts can be toxic and potentially fatal. Alcohol consumption can cause vomiting, diarrhea, decreased coordination, difficulty breathing, and central nervous system depression. Never give alcoholic beverages to your dog, and ensure they can't access any spilled alcohol.

Caffeine: Caffeine, found in coffee, tea, energy drinks, and some sodas, affects dogs similarly to how it affects humans but can be much more toxic due to their smaller size. Symptoms of caffeine poisoning include restlessness, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, tremors, and seizures. Keep all caffeinated products out of your dog's reach.

Finally, remember to keep these harmful foods out of your dog's reach and be cautious when sharing food with them. If you suspect your dog has ingested something toxic, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Nourishing Your Best Friend: The Importance of Good Dog Food

As pet owners, we want nothing but the best for our so loved dogs. One of the key factors in ensuring their overall well-being is providing them with a nutritious and balanced diet. Just like humans, dogs require a high-quality food that meets their specific nutritional needs. Let's explore the importance of good dog food and how it contributes to the health and vitality of our beloved pets.

Body:
Essential Nutrients: Good dog food is formulated to provide dogs with the essential nutrients they need to thrive. It contains a balanced combination of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals that support their growth, development, and overall bodily functions. High-quality dog food is specifically tailored to meet the unique nutritional requirements of dogs at different life stages, such as puppies, adults, and senior dogs.

Digestive Health: A well-formulated dog food promotes healthy digestion. It includes easily digestible ingredients, dietary fibers, and prebiotics that support a balanced gut flora, which contributes to optimal nutrient absorption and a healthy digestive system. By maintaining a healthy digestive tract, good dog food can help prevent gastrointestinal issues and promote regular bowel movements.

Energy and Vitality: Dogs are energetic creatures that require a sufficient amount of energy to support their active lifestyle. Premium dog food provides the right balance of carbohydrates and fats to fuel their daily activities and maintain a healthy weight. By supplying them with adequate energy, good dog food helps to keep dogs active, alert, and full of vitality.

Coat and Skin Health: The condition of a dog's coat and skin can be an indicator of their overall health. Good dog food contains essential fatty acids, such as omega-3 and omega-6, which promote healthy skin and a shiny coat. These nutrients help reduce inflammation, itchiness, and dryness, ensuring that your dog's skin remains moisturized and their coat is lustrous and free from excessive shedding.

Strong Immune System: A robust immune system is crucial for dogs to ward off diseases and infections. Quality dog food is fortified with antioxidants, vitamins (such as vitamin E and C), and minerals that support a strong immune response. These nutrients help to strengthen the immune system, reducing the risk of illness and improving your dog's overall resistance to diseases.

When reading the ingredients list, it is very hard to select the best food...We do our best to make sure our selection is not laced with a lot of fillers.

Choosing good dog food is one of the most important decisions we make as responsible pet owners. By providing our animals with a well-balanced and nutritious diet, we can ensure their overall health, longevity, and happiness. Consider consulting with your veterinarian to determine the specific nutritional needs of your dog and select a high-quality dog food that suits their age, breed, and any specific dietary requirements. Remember, investing in good dog food is an investment in your dog's well-being and a way to show them just how much we care.

Selecting the Perfect Dog Crate...Remember, a crate for your dog should be a haven and their den to sleep, escape, relax...
07/12/2023

Selecting the Perfect Dog Crate...Remember, a crate for your dog should be a haven and their den to sleep, escape, relax, etc. Start introducing your pet gradually to the crate. Make it happy and use a command. We use Kennel UP every time we want our dog to go into her crate at night or if we were leaving the house for a long period. Eventually, they will go into the crate on their own when given the command.

Currently, we leave her crate open so that she can go in and out as she pleases. Remember never to use the crate as a punishment...it is their den—peaceful place.

Our Tips:
When selecting the right dog crate for your dog, it's essential to consider various factors to ensure their comfort, safety, and well-being. Here are some informative tips to guide you in choosing the appropriate dog crate:

1. Size: The crate should be spacious enough for your dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Measure your dog's height, length, and weight to determine the appropriate crate size. Avoid selecting a crate that is too large as it may not provide a secure and cozy environment for your dog.

2. Crate Type: There are different types of dog crates available, including wire crates, plastic crates, and soft-sided crates. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages. Wire crates provide good ventilation and visibility, while plastic crates offer more security and privacy. Soft-sided crates are lightweight and portable. Consider your dog's needs and temperament when selecting the crate type.

3. Durability: Choose a crate made from high-quality materials that can withstand your dog's activity level. Dogs who are prone to chewing or scratching may require a sturdier crate, such as those made from heavy-duty metal or reinforced plastic.

4. Safety Features: Ensure that the crate has secure latches or locks to prevent accidental openings. Smooth edges and no sharp points will reduce the risk of injuries. The crate should also provide adequate ventilation to keep your dog comfortable. AND, take any collar off your dog while in the crate. A collar can easily get caught on any type of object that unnoticeably sticks out.

5. Portability: If you plan to travel with your dog or need to move the crate frequently, consider a portable and lightweight option. Soft-sided crates or collapsible wire crates are typically easier to transport and store. If choosing a wire crate, make sure it comes with a tray bottom. It is better for your dog and easy clean up if any accident should occur.

6. Easy to Clean: Look for a crate with a removable tray or easy-to-clean materials. Accidents and spills can happen, so having a crate that is simple to clean will make your life easier.

7. Consider Your Dog's Needs: Take into account your dog's specific needs and temperament. Some dogs may benefit from a crate with a cover to create a den-like environment, while others may prefer an open crate for better visibility.

Don't forget...introducing a dog crate should be done gradually and positively. Use crate training techniques to help your dog associate the crate with a safe and comfortable space. With the right crate, your dog can have a secure retreat and a peaceful place to rest and enjoy.
