Throwback Thursday...Project Spotlight

Rocky Mountain News + The Denver Post

This one is a true Denver throwback.

Years ago, Boyd provided signage for the Denver Newspaper Agency building...home to two names that were once a huge part of daily life in Colorado... the Rocky Mountain News and The Denver Post.

The sign package included everything from ADA room identification and wayfinding to building identification and specialty pieces, including signage honoring Rocky Mountain News photographer Harry Rhoads.

Looking back at these photos is also a great reminder of how signage captures a moment in time. Companies change, buildings change and brands evolve, but the work becomes a little piece of the history of the places we've been fortunate enough to be part of.

Definitely a fun one to find in the Boyd archives.

Material Monday: Corian

You probably know Corian® from countertops...but we see a sign material.

Corian is a solid surface material that gives us some pretty interesting options when it comes to architectural signage. It can be cut, routed, engraved and fabricated into custom shapes, making it a great material when a design calls for something beyond a standard flat sign panel.

And then there's light.

Certain colors and thicknesses of Corian can be used to create beautiful illuminated effects. Instead of simply adding light to a sign, the material itself can become part of how the light is diffused - creating a soft, architectural glow.

We've used Corian for everything from ADA room identification and dimensional sign components to illuminated features and larger specialty installations.

It can be clean and modern.
It can be dimensional.
It can be subtle.
Or, with the right lighting, it can completely change after the lights come on.

That's one of our favorite things about materials in signage...sometimes what they can do is just as important as how they look.

Good installs start long before our installers get to the site.

Installation is challenging enough on its own, so we do what we can in the shop to make the field side easier.

As part of our QC and final packing process, we take the time to organize our signs in a way that sets our installers up for success. In this crate, a single sign type was packed and labeled to match our shop drawings by page, with those pages already sorted by level and location number.

It may seem like a small detail, but that kind of organization helps the installation team move faster, stay accurate and spend less time hunting for what comes next.

A lot goes into a successful sign program...and sometimes it looks like a crate packed the right way.

A sign that knows exactly where it is. 🌴

For Barbary Beach House in Key West, we worked alongside the team on-site to help bring this entry sign to life.

During the day, it feels right at home in the Key West setting. At night, the lighting gives it a completely different personality.

We always enjoy seeing one of our fabricated pieces become part of a larger design vision.

Day or night...this one definitely says Key West.

Material Monday: Frosted Vinyl

Frosted vinyl is one of those materials that can quietly do a lot.

Applied directly to glass, it can create privacy while still allowing light to move through a space. But it doesn't have to be just a solid frosted panel. It can be cut into patterns, stripes, gradients, logos and custom graphics that become part of the overall interior design.

And because we're working with vinyl, the possibilities go well beyond what you could accomplish with permanently etched or sandblasted glass.

Sometimes the signage isn't hanging on the glass...the glass itself becomes the sign. That's what makes frosted vinyl such a versatile tool in an architectural sign package.

Throwback Thursday...Marriott Aruba

Digging through the Boyd archives keeps turning up some pretty great projects.

This week we're heading back to Aruba, where Boyd produced a full family of signage for Marriott Aruba...from guest room identification and interior wayfinding to exterior directionals and pool signage.

And you can definitely tell what era some of these came from! The scroll details, decorative fonts and themed shapes were all part of creating signage that carried the resort experience throughout the property.

Sign styles and trends have certainly changed over the years...but creating custom signage that belongs in its environment never goes out of style.

Rules signs don’t have to feel like an afterthought.

Pool rules, fitness guidelines, grill etiquette...these signs have a lot of information to communicate. But that doesn’t mean they have to look like they were dropped into the space at the last minute.

At Nita, the warm rust tone gives the signs enough contrast to stand out against bold tile, graphic walls and modern finishes while still feeling connected to the overall interior design.

Sometimes the “rules” can have a little personality too.

Material Monday: Wood Posts

Sometimes the material surrounding the sign makes just as much of an impact as the sign itself.

Wood posts and timber structures can bring warmth, scale and character to an exterior sign system - especially when the architecture or surrounding landscape calls for something a little more natural.

From a simple wood post supporting a directional sign to large timber structures incorporated into monument signage, wood can completely change the personality of an exterior sign.

Pair it with painted aluminum, stone, steel or dimensional graphics and you get the best of both worlds - the warmth of a natural material with durable sign components designed for the outdoors.

And because wood is a natural material, every piece brings its own grain, knots and variation to the finished product. That's part of the character...and part of what needs to be considered when designing with it.

Sometimes it's not just about what the sign is made from.

It's about what holds it up.

When the sign becomes part of the architecture.

Rich woodgrain, polished metallic trim and a soft stone-like face come together here in a way that feels more like custom millwork than traditional signage.

The details are what make it work - the layered construction, the reflective edges, the material contrast and the restraint in the copy.

This is the kind of sign that quietly does its job while still feeling completely intentional to the space around it.

Beautiful signage does not have to shout.

Today we recognize the fighters, celebrate the survivors and remember those we have lost.
