Welcome to Red Carpet Country
Towering red mesas, a proud Western heritage and some of the most unique natural wonders in Oklahoma are the hallmarks of Northwest and North Central Oklahoma known as Red Carpet County. The Red Carpet Country regional tourism organization represents 16 counties in northwest and north central Oklahoma. A mild climate, rich history, amazing museums and abundant fishing
and hunting make Red Carpet Country a popular tourism destination. The counties represented by Red Carpet Country are Cimarron, Texas, Beaver, Harper, Woods, Alfalfa, Grant, Kay, Ellis, Woodward, Major, Garfield, Noble, Dewey, Blaine and Kingfisher counties. Red Carpet Country is economically anchored by agriculture and oil and gas exploration. The largest cities are Enid, Ponca City, Woodward, Guymon, Blackwell, Perry, Watonga, Alva, and Kingfisher. Marland’s mansion, Jesse Chisholm’s trail and the only preserved sod house open to the public. The Elk's Rodeo in Woodward and other outstanding rodeos are throughout the region, Vici’s scenic motorcycle ride, the Ho**er Car Show, the Rattlesnake Round-up in Waynoka, the Watonga Cheese Festival, Ponca City’s Herb Festival and Cherokee Strip Celebrations throughout the region marking the great land run of 1893 that opened the region to settlement. Kaw Lake and Canton Lake offer abundant camping, boating and fishing opportunities. The region’s rich culture and history are captured in a number of fascinating museums and historic sites including the Standing Bear Museum in Ponca City, Hajek Motorsports Museum in Ames, Fort Supply, The Waynoka Air & Rail Museum, the Windmill Museum in Shattuck, the Twister Movie Museum in Wakita, and the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center in Enid. Northwest Oklahoma is home to a number of mountain ranges and mesas, a testament to the Southwest Tablelands eco-region that dominates the area. Canyons and grasslands, such as the Rita Blanca National Grassland, help to give Northwest Oklahoma a distinctive Southwest-like landscape, differing from most of the state. Great Salt Plains Lake, one of the largest inland salt lakes in the United States is located near Cherokee. Rare selenite crystals with an hourglass shape are hidden just beneath the surface of the salt flats and provides hours of entertainment digging for crystals. In the fall and winter months the Great Salt Plains is a bird watchers haven when the lake area is filled with white pelicans, sandhill cranes, and an occasional whooping crane. In winter, several thousand geese can often be seen along the lake shoreline. The Sand Dunes in Beaver, and the Little Sahara State Park south of Waynoka which boasts over 1,600 acres of sand dunes ranging in height from 25 to 75 feet. The park is known as one of the best ATV riding spots in the Midwest and is the busiest state park in the state. Alabaster Caverns State Park near Freedom features the largest natural gypsum cave in the world that is open to the public. Black Mesa, the state’s highest peak, is part of a large range of mesas in the panhandle which stretch into New Mexico. Another mesa range, the Glass (or Gloss) Mountains, sits in the center of Northwest Oklahoma, just south of the Cimarron River along Highway 412.
