White Mountain Peak

White Mountain Peak stands at 14,252’ tall. It is the third highest peak in California, behind Mt. Whitney and Williamson. One of the attractive aspects of hiking to “bag” this peak, is that you can actually drive up a dirt road to about 10,000’ or so, where you can park and begin your hike. This mountain is unique in that it is only one of 2 fourteeners in California that are not within the Sierra Nevada, the other being Mt. Shasta. The University of California has research facilities near the top where they conduct studies on the effects of altitude on physiology.

Muir Woods National Monument

President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed Muir Woods a National Monument in 1908 making it the nation’s 7th. Muir Woods is located on Mt. Tamalpais in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It falls within Marin County of Northern California, just north of San Francisco. It’s main inhabitants are giant, ancient, majestic Sequoia redwood trees.

Electric Peak, Montana

Electric Peak is in the Gallatin Mountain Range of Southern Montana and is not to be confused with another Electric Peak in Colorado. It falls within Yellowstone National Park, near the Wyoming border and stands tall at 10,969’. It is named Electric Peak, as members of the US Geological Survey who had made its first ascent in 1872, were caught in an electrical storm.

Inyo National Forest

Inyo National Forest spans both the states of California and Nevada. The Sierra Nevada and White Mountain ranges are part of it, and within those ranges Mt. Whitney in the Sierra is the tallest mountain in the contiguous 48 states at 14,505’, and east of the Sierra range in the White Mountains on the Nevada side, Boundary Peak rises as Nevada’s highest peak at 13,147’. Within Inyo National Forest are 9 different wilderness areas: Ansel Adams Wilderness, Boundary Peak Wilderness, Golden Trout Wilderness, Hoover Wilderness, Inyo Mountains Wilderness, John Muir Wilderness, Owns River Headwaters Wilderness, South Sierra Wilderness and White Mountains Wilderness.

The Teton Range of mountains in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park is nearly 40 miles long. The major peaks of significant prominence are the central and most dominating Grand Teton at 13,770’, followed by Mt. Owen at 12,928’, Middle Teton at 12,804’, Teewinot at 12,325’, South Teton at 12,514’, Nez Perce at 11,901’, and others trailing behind this main cast.

The last major eruption took place roughly 200 years ago. Mt. Hood lies within Mt. Hood National Park. Within Mt. National Park are 8 different wilderness areas: Mt. Hood Wilderness - the largest of them all, Badger Creek, Bull of the Woods, Clackamas, Lower White River, Mark O. Hatfield, Roaring River, and the Salmon–Huckleberry Wilderness

Mt. Evans, another Colorado “14er”, has the unique distinction of being the mountain with the highest paved road in North American. So that’s right, you can practically DRIVE up to the summit! At the very top (not where the sign pictured is) - it stands at 14,267’ in elevation amongst the Rocky Mountains and within the Mt. Evans Wilderness, Arapaho National Forest and Roosevelt National Forest.
