Happy ❤️ Day!

❓In the spirit of love I want your answer: What is one of your your most-loved-photos and why?

I'm sharing a few of my most loved winter photos with you today! This weekend I'm up in Ely MN at the family cabin with the boys, the cousins, aunts, uncles and grandpa. One of my most loved photos comes from the set I've shared below. I took these shots a couple years ago on this same "family winter cabin weekend" and I just love them because it brings me back to that day. It was one of those moments when the planning and the weather actually cooperated, allowing the kids to spend the day ice fishing, building forts, and getting pulled behind the snowmobile. Winter in Minnesota has its moments!

Grace came in last week for her first headshots to launch her into the world of acting & modeling, and I couldn't have been more excited to work with such a beautiful spirit! When my clients ask for ‘natural retouching’—this is what they mean...

Good retouching is NOT
❌ It's not a TikTok filter you click and apply and snap - everything is perfect
❌ It's not drastically changing the shape of your face, body size, or features until you are barely recognizable
❌ It's not changing the texture of your skin or hair to look like a plastic barbie doll
❌ It's definitely not the "clean up crew" of sloppy photography, poor posing, and bad lighting - "Oh don't worry about that, we'll just fix it in photoshop"

Good retouching IS
✅ A meticulous process of hand-retouching one image at a time with care and precision
✅ Honoring the shape and features of your individual body while subtly nudging any "problem areas" into a better position
✅ Keeping the texture, form and depth of the elements of your face - the skin, eyes, teeth, hair - while softening and minimizing things like wrinkles, pimples, dark undereyes, chapped lips, and flyaway hairs
✅ Fixing any elements that might distract from the overall look - this could be fixing a chipped tooth, removing invisalign nubs, filling in gaps in the hair or part line, changing the color of the clothing, or straightening small wrinkles and folds in the fabric around the edges of the body

Bottom Line: I want you to love your image because it's the best version of YOU. Like you just woke up from the best night of sleep after 3 months of sticking out your New Year's resolutions after your kids just told you they are financially solvent and don't need your help anymore. With everything happening right now in Minneapolis I've had a lot of conversations with friends, clients and family who are feeling very unsettled. In moments like this, I try to focus on what I can do—show up with compassion, volunteer locally, and support organizations that make a real difference.

Volunteering is a great way to reset and reconnect with the world around you. 💛 Giving freely of our time and gifts to organizations that are truly changing lives gets us out of the doom scroll and into living with more purpose and presence—and I’m especially grateful for organizations like Helping Paws in Eden Prairie. 🐾

Helping Paws is an amazing nonprofit with a small army of volunteers who train assistance dogs. These beautiful dogs change the quality of life for the people in my community who need it most. It's truly amazing to see first hand a dog who can help open doors and retrieve dropped keys for someone who is wheelchair-bound or help sooth a parent with PTSD so they can drive their kids to school.

It was an honor to donate photography to the team at Helping Paws when they needed better photos to help tell their story. I hope my small contribution of time and energy has a ripple effect that causes even more people around me to have access to an assistance dog. Last week Kelcie came in for her Corporate Express Headshot session. Last December her company had me come to their office to get the whole team photographed. Unfortunately Kelcie was sick that day and missed the photos!

No worries, we have a solution for that! Stuart came in on Tuesday for an Express Headshot Session. It was a quick 20 minute session where we chatted about what he was looking for and what he liked, took a variety of photos with different head/shoulder positions on 2 different backgrounds, and then sat down and chose his favorite for retouching. He pointed out a couple things he wanted erased - a quick fix in post - and was on his way. The next morning I emailed him this image in both a Web Size for his LinkedIn profile and a Full Size for any printed needs (like if he was presenting at a conference and they needed to print his headshot in the program).

These kids and their big dreams, it's just so cool to see! Meet Veronica, a very talented and driven 9th grader who is going big in the theater world. After several years of participating in her school's musicals and theater productions she ventured into the greater Twin Cities world of theater last summer and is now applying for summer theater programs across the country.

Of course all of these applications require a current headshot - so we got it done for her! Veronica, I wish you all the best as you go for your big dreams and I know you'll achieve anything you put your heart into!

🎄 Happy Holidays Friends, Family & Future Clients!

Just a quick note that EJP will be closed today (Friday 12/19) through Monday 12/29 while our family is on vacation in La Cruz, Mexico. I will be periodically checking emails but might not be responding until the week of the 29th. 🤞 Wish us luck - this is a "surprise" Christmas present for our boys, who are currently ages 12 and 14. We are trying our best to sneakily pack, plan, get Tillie (our golden retriever) to our friends' house and leave the house at 5:30am on Friday without them figuring it out. It's going to either be the greatest most-fun-adventure ever, or we're going to be completely teen-angst ridiculed for ripping them away from their important social plans 🤷‍♀️. By the time this posts we will be on the airplane. I can give you an update when we land - ha!
