Every English teacher told me that to be a good writer, I had to be a good reader. And in the days before raising a family and massive deadlines, this was easy to do. As a journalist, I read mostly magazines and online articles. Then one day, I became frustrated with how rigid my writing sounded. It was factual and grammatically correct, but it sounded boring. Immediately, I knew the solution was to pick up a book.
Sadly, I only read 5 to 8 books a year, which is the same amount as 13% of other Americans (Source: Literary Hub). The change in my writing wasn't instant, but it eventually helped my articles sound more fluid.
So while I'm often quick to dismiss age-old advice, sometimes it's repeated often because it's true.
