Every English teacher told me that to be a good writer, I had to be a good reader. And in the days before raising a family and massive deadlines, this was easy to do. As a journalist, I read mostly magazines and online articles. Then one day, I became frustrated with how rigid my writing sounded. It was factual and grammatically correct, but it sounded boring. Immediately, I knew the solution was to pick up a book.

Sadly, I only read 5 to 8 books a year, which is the same amount as 13% of other Americans (Source: Literary Hub). The change in my writing wasn't instant, but it eventually helped my articles sound more fluid.

So while I'm often quick to dismiss age-old advice, sometimes it's repeated often because it's true.

Aviation is a key mode of transportation in Alaska, especially for 82 percent of communities not connected to the state's main road system. In the June edition of Alaska Business Magazine, I interviewed passenger and cargo carriers about Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, internal safety policies, and advanced technologies that reduce risks for everyone involved.

Commercial aviation is the safest way to travel—or so airlines have been saying since at least the ‘60s. But the industry has changed a lot since the advent of the Jet Age...

Think finance is boring? Think again. In the June GVEA Employee Spotlight, Lisa Newman talks about her love of numbers and how she uses her position as a payroll specialist to ensure employee checks are accurate and to help when questions arise. She also talks about her long history of volunteering in the Fairbanks community and how art impacts her life.

Congratulations to our client Frosty Feet Running Company, which is celebrating 6 years in business! When Stacy told me she still planned to open a few months after COVID started, I thought she was crazy. But she has become a staple in the run community for gear, advice, and events.

You can celebrate with Stacy and friends on Saturday, June 6th, at Frosty Feet Running Company from 11am to 2pm. There will be a BBQ with hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers, and sides. Plus, she is offering an all-day sale:

- Select shoes 50%-75% OFF
- 10% OFF all nutrition
- 15% off socks with the purchase of shoes

No real artwork was made tonight. But after several long months of writing, I took a moment to experiment with inks, glass pens, and Dura-Lar paper. When it dries, it will get shuffled into a pile a potentials for larger, unrelated projects. Sometimes it's nice to have fun. Sometimes you can just put ink to a page for no damn reason

May 11–17 is Salvation Army Week!

Throughout this week, we want to highlight the impact of The Salvation Army here in Fairbanks and around the world. Each Salvation Army location is unique, shaped by the needs of the community it serves—yet united by one mission.

Founded by William Booth and Catherine Booth, The Salvation Army was built on a deep love for people and a commitment to serve those in need. Their mission continues today: to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

Over the past 150+ years, so much has been accomplished—and we are grateful to be part of that ongoing story here in Fairbanks.

We want to take this time to say thank you to all our Corps Officers, staff, volunteers, and community partners. Your dedication, compassion, and service continue to shape the work we do every day.

With honor and gratitude, we celebrate all that has been done—and all that is still to come.
